Inside the starter there is a long spring that unwinds as you pull the cord. The spring then recoils its self and pulls the cord back into the starter and onto a pulley. A simple clutch or levers/pawls let the pulley catch the crankshaft in only one direction so the pulley is free when the engine starts.
Most quality OEM and replacement recoil springs should be capable of a minimum of 3,000 to 5,000 firing cycles before changing.
A spring that is placed at the rear of the bolt of a automatic or semi automatic gun, that is utilized to take in or contain the recoil. The recoil spring is needed to absorb the shock of when a bullet is fired and the firearm pulls back towards the user so as to lessen the reaction of impact the user receives.
Recoil start
This starter mechanism comprises a rope, with a grip at the end, moulded rope reels and a spring. The rope is coiled within a reel which is held under spring tension within an outer reel.
The impact load of the steel cylinder on the recoil spring is provided by the power spring. The steel cylinder compresses the power spring to store energy. After release, the potential energy of the spring is converted to the kinetic energy of the steel cylinder.

While repairing broken starter rope rewind spring popped out. need instructions to rewind and reinstall. judy
ANSWER : Re winding starter springs is a real black art, and not for the faint hearted, always wear eye protection before attemping this, hook the end of the spring into the cover, now start winding the spring in one coil at a time, keep your thumb on the coils that you have already wound in to stop them popping out, keep winding it in and turning the cover as well to aid you.Eventually you will come to the last centre coil which should just drop in.
Good luck

Poulan Wild Thing 18 Inch replace starter spring?
ANSWER : A new spring comes wound tight enough to be dropped into place in the starter housing (Easiest).I invert and secure the starter housing and rewind the spring large coil to small (need eye protection, both hands and no women around work area!). I’m right handed so I tension the spring enough to insert it inside the previous coil while holding what has already been installed with my left about 180° from my right hand. The tension will hold the spring in the housing once completely inserted. Then bend slightly the inner most part to engage the starter spool. It will require about 2 turns of pretension to retract properly. If you’re lucky you can pull the cord out enough for a pretension then slightly raise and add the withdrawn cord to the spool. Both methods require about 2 turns of pretension to rewind the cord when pulled.Lou
