How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If the chainsaw won`t start, or starts and then stops and you find the spark plug wet with fuel mixture, it means that the engine is flooded (you will probably smell petrol). It happens when too much fuel enters the combustion chamber, possibly because you have pressed the primer many times.
A dirty carburetor, bad gasoline and low-quality two-stroke oil that creates deposits all contribute to chainsaw starting problems.
Check the air filter and spark plug on the Husqvarna 350. If the air filter is clogged or dirty, clean it or replace it with a new one from Husqvarna or an online parts house. You can test this by trying to start the saw without the air filter. Some parts houses offer maintenance kits that include the filter.
Pull-in occurs when the chain on the bottom of the bar is suddenly stopped when it is pinched or caught or encounters a foreign object (Figure 7). The reaction of the chain pulls the saw forward and may cause you to lose control of it.
Check your air filter. A dirty air filter can affect your gas chainsaw`s ability to cut. Issues like low power, poor performance or if the engine`s stalling during cutting could all be signs you need to clean it. Follow the owner manual guidelines for maintenance.
If your saw idles fine, and then bogs down when pressing the throttle, then adjust your `H` screw by unscrewing. This will increase the amount of fuel to the carburetor under load. If your saw idles fine, then runs lumpy with a lot of smoke when pressing the throttle, then adjust your `H` screw by screwing in.
1. Dull chain and or improper lubrication to the bar and chain, sharpen and or clean the bars oil holes. 2. Air filter and fuel filter for restrictions and contamination, clean or replace as needed.
PULL, PUSH and KICKBACK are terms for the direction a reaction takes. PULL – When you are cutting on top of a log with the lower portion of the chain moving toward you, the chain saw will be pulled into the wood and away from you. PUSH – Cutting on the underside of a log pushes the chain saw toward you.
1. Dull chain and or improper lubrication to the bar and chain, sharpen and or clean the bars oil holes. 2. Air filter and fuel filter for restrictions and contamination, clean or replace as needed.
The carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is often caused by leaving fuel in the chainsaw for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the chainsaw engine to stall.

Chain saw won’t start – pull starter pulley hard to pull?
ANSWER : If it worked fine the last time you used it, then pull the spark plug and try pulling the rope. See if it’s easier or if gas shoots out of the plug hole. I’ve seen this happen when the diaphram in the carb goes bad from sitting over winter. It loads up the cylider with fuel and makes it very difficult to pull the rope. If there is no fuel in the cyliner and it’s still hard to pull, make sure there is nothing binding the clutch/sprocket. I’ve had chucks of wook lodged in there that caused it to bind the crank output, which resulted in a hard pull on the rope as well.

My ics 633gc concrete saw seems to have to much compresion to pull start
ANSWER : Any chance it was run with little to no lubricant? When they get hard to pull that is usually the first sign of the engine getting ready to seize

Pull cord is difficult to pull after third pull becomes stuck but will turn if pull hard repeats every three to four pulls.
ANSWER : No response to clarification request.

Hard to pull starter rope. It doesn’t pull smoothly. hard to pull.
ANSWER : Take the spark plug out–does it pull smoothly now? If not, the pull cord may be the wrong size or it is damaged and/or doesn’t rewind correctly. Does the machine have a compression release? If so, it may be plugged with carbon. With the spark plug out, pull the engine through several times briskly with the throttle open and the choke off to expel any excess fuel from the crankcase. Hope some of this helps!

While trying to start the saw the compression is so great that it is near imposible to pull the start rope ….ie won’t spin fast enough to start … new plug ,,,, new gas …..no start ,,,tired arm ,??????
ANSWER : Is there a compression release button?

Starter rope hard to pull on mantis tiller
ANSWER : Sounds like your engine may be seized up. Mine did the same thing and I had to replace the block. If any dirt gets past the air cleaner or if your fuel mixture isn’t right it won’t take long to lock it up. If you need info on where to find parts, let me know. Good luck.

Recoil spring on homelite chain saw doesn’t retract pull rope
ANSWER : Easy suggestion would be to get new spring coil. Is it older saw? Have had to change mine on poulan saws before.

My edger tipped over briefly, now the starter cord is hard to pull and it won’t start.
ANSWER : Try removing the spark
plug and squirting some carb cleaner or starting fluid in the
cylinder. Pull the starter cord several times for the piston to drive
out the oil. Clean the plug and replace it. Try to start as normal.
If you have starting fluid squirt a shot in the air cleaner to help
make it easier to start the first time.
