How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The majority of leaking quick-connect fitting leaks are caused by a damaged O-ring, improper installation, eroded tubing, or too much torque placed on the tubing. Quick-connect fittings have a simple but powerful design.
Over time pressure washer hoses can start to leak, which tend to be caused from either wear and tear to the hose or damages to the seals on the connectors. The first thing to investigate is the area of the leak and if it happens to be from a connection, suspect the seals have worn out on the connector.
In most cases, the leak will be caused by a loose or punctured drain hose, a fault with the drain pump, or a worn-out tub-to-pump hose. If it is possible to run the washer without causing further damage, removing the access panel and then running the washer will allow you to observe where the leak is coming from.
While there are ways to repair a hose with the right tools and experience, it`s not recommended. Replacing your hose is very affordable, and the peace of mind you get knowing your hose won`t burst open and injure you is worth the investment.

Actual O-Ring Dimensions: O-Rings measure 3/8″ Inside Diameter x 0.100″ Thick. These 3/8″ o-rings are designed for 1/4″ Quick Connect fittings found on many pressure washer wands and hoses.
While o-rings are typically round and vary in thickness, gaskets are flat seals that sit between two flat surfaces. Gaskets are often circular, however they can be cut into virtually any shape, including square, triangle, rectangle or any other complex form.

Had the Northstar 3000 psi Pressure Washer for 2 months and it started leaking oil from the pump during use. Took it to Northern and they are replacing the pump under warranty but said it was likely because I was using quick connects on my garden hose coupling and that was restricting the water flow making the pump overheat. They said never to use quick connects on the garden hose unless the opening is at least 5/8″. Does anyone make such a quick connect? I hate having to screw the garden hose on every time, and also having to remove my quick connects at the water spigot end. Thanks.
ANSWER : It is easy to check if your hose and quick connects are supplying enough water to the pump. Your pressure washer gallon per minuite requirements are printed on the machine and also on the pressure tips in GPM. Your post indicates 2.5 gpm but check your documentation of GPM. Next remove the tip from the wand and connect your hose with current quick connects to the machine. Start engine and direct the pressure wand into a bucket for exactly one minute. Measure the amount of water in the bucket, it should be very close to stated gallons. Do the same test with tip installed and compare measurement. If pump is starving for water you will not get proper amount of water in the bucket and the water hose will collapse. Two to four gallons of water per minute is not very demanding and should be delivered even with very small opening. You can even just direct the hose into the bucket for one minute and check how much water your hose is capable of delivering. I believe that you will find no problem with water delivery to pump. I would certainly enlighten Northern with your findings and question their evaluation. When you start using your pressure washer again try using it at lowest pressure to get the job done. Lowering the pressure to about 75% of max will increase the life of the pump and engine. Good luck with you pump

Brand new machine and it ran fine for the first 5 minutes then when I squeeze the trigger now the pump takes a second to click on then when it does the engine stalls
ANSWER : Sound like you need to replace the unloader valve,or take it apart and free it up,lube the seats and o rings and retry the washer to see if it works. The valve has the pressure regulator in it so the knob that you adjust the pressure with needs to come off and then just unscrew the unloader valve.

There is water squirting out of a hole next the pressure hose connection. Is there a missing screw? Or an adjustment to the washer that can be made. There is no pressure because of this leak.
ANSWER : If this hole has threads then it might be the soap inlet. If water is shooting out under pressure you may have an obstruction in the hose/handle. Try removing the hose and running the washer and see if the water flows out the connection. If the hose ends up being the problem a visual inspection and cleaning of all inlets and the handle should clear it.

If the water coming out of the hole is low/tap line pressure then I think your bypass *(or unloader) valve is stuck in the bypass position.

A stuck unloader just needs to be unstuck and lightly cleaned. A light coating of silicon grease wouldnt hurt either!

Get the manual for this pump and see how to open/remove the unloader valve.

When starting engine ,very hard to get past compression stroke
ANSWER : With someone holding open the trigger on the washer gun try pull starting the engine. If it becomes easier you probably have an unloader that is beginning to stick in the load position. Get a diagram of your pump and locate the unloader and remove it. A light scrubbing with valve body and some silicon grease should free it up. Good luck and be careful!
