Craftsman
My questions concerns a 15.5 Koehler engine in a Craftsman riding lawn mower. It started acting up a couple of weeks ago. The engine would sputter and die. It would start back up and everything appeared to be fine. The other day after starting and mowing about 50 feet it back fired, blew out a bit of black smoke and would not start. It has spark. I took off the carburetor bowl and checked for debris and to see if the solenoid was working. There was a minute amount of dirt in the bottom of the bowl and the solenoid seemed to work fine. I cleaned things up and put it back together. It r

I had this puzzler too! Turned out the problem is caused by the fuel-bowl needle valve. It may look OK but looks are deceiving. It gets a coating on the tip that causes a poor seal … poor enough to allow fuel to flood the engine after a short run time. The flooded engine dies, but restarts OK after a delay that clears (cooks off) the excess fuel that flooded/killed the engine. SOLUTION: Remove the needle valve and carefully wipe and clean the tip with a white cloth soaked in solvent (gas is OK). The cloth will show the deposits that cause the problem. Carefully re-install the needle valve and float parts, start the engine, confirm that it runs OK and continuously. Simple fix …. puzzling problem.
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
Clogged or Dirty Air Filters It is one of the most common problems that cause lawnmowers to sputter. The mowers take the air from the surrounding through air filters and mix it with fuel inside the engine. So, if the air filter is clogged or dirty, it will affect the flow of air into the carburetor.
Clogged or Dirty Air Filters Dirty air filters are one of the most common reasons lawn mowers sputter. Dirt can be present in the apertures that lead from the carburetor and the fuel filter and interrupt the flow of fuel supply to the combustion chamber. You want to be sure to clean or replace dirty air filters.
A full gas tank and oil reservoir are the essential first steps when checking why the lawn mower won`t stay running, but the problem could also be a dirty filter, clogged carburetor, improper fuel mixture, or a dirty spark plug.
A dirty carburetor is the most common cause of a lawn mower that starts and then dies. Other possible causes include: Stale/Dirty Gas. Faulty Choke.
Your lawn mower runs for 30 minutes then dies if you are having issues such as a bad spark plug, air problems, a malfunctioning carburetor, or a faulty gas cap. You may even encounter the issue that your lawn mower runs for 5 minutes then dies.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
Usually, when your car begins to sputter and then slowly dies, it`s because it has lost fuel pressure. The most common reason is simply running out of gas.
A sputtering engine may just mean you need to have your fuel filter replaced. All vehicles have a series of vacuum hoses that create the fuel pressure. If one of them leaks or is damaged in any way, you will lose significant fuel pressure. The vehicle`s exhaust system can greatly impact the engine`s performance.
A sputtering engine is a sign of a lean fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. This can happen if you have a clogged somewhere in the fuel system that impedes the delivery of fuel into the chamber. For example, your fuel filter or fuel lines might be clogged.
Condensation inside the gas tank is one culprit, but moisture can also enter the system through a loose or ill fitting gas cap. The best solution is to drain the mower`s gas tank and refill it with fresh gasoline. A clogged fuel filter can also cause a mower engine to die.
The spark plugs are worn or damaged If you find that your lawnmower keeps dying, or keeps stalling while cutting grass, then inspect the spark plugs. Look for signs of damage or wear. Something as simple as a cracked porcelain insulator can mean an electrode has been damaged or burned away.

Battery the battery is dying and it will start but, after a few mins the engine starts to sputter then goes back to idle and eventually dies. could this just be the dead battery? is that the reason the engine dies?
ANSWER : Usually, if the battery is dying, it won’t start up again.
Usually, motorized vehicles only use the battery to start the engine, then the alternator contributes all the power for actual operation.
A dead alternator or battery shouldn’t ‘sputter’, they would just stop dead.
If the engine will start, run and then sputter…there is a fuel problem.
1. There may be a ‘cut-off’ in the fuel line which is in the off postion. It may look like a thin, flat wing-nut.
2. The gas may be contaminated with water residue if the gasoline has been sitting a long time. I believe you can get some water treatment to fix this without having to dump the fuel tank contents.
3. The fuel line is blocked with dirt somewhere, I would check the fuel filter and work backwards from there.
Engine quits running at full throttle and hot
ANSWER : Sounds like coil but check oil
Kawasaki engine dies after running 20-30 minutes
ANSWER : Check fuel cap vent.
I am another owner of the 24 hp. briggs and stratten ELS that has blew a rod out the side. How can I get help replacing this motor that has been such a terrible problem
MANTIS TILLER WITH HONDA GX25 ENGINE STARTS FINE BUT WHEN GIVEN THROTTLE DIES OUT. ALSO A LITTLE WHILE BACK OIL WAS COMING OUT OF CARB BUT THIS HAS NOW STOPPED. THIS IS A 4 STROKE ENGINE WITH APPROX 4 HOURS USE.

ANSWER : I
also have Mantis tiller for 2 years. From the very beginning I had
a problems. I was referred by Mantis to the repair store and was charged $90.00
for oil drainage. The second time I was waiting for handle replacement for ~ 1
month. This tiller can’t handle even little jobs and the warranty doesn’t worth
a dime. Maybe I will be more successful using it in my living room . I have an
equipment with Briggs and
Stratton engines and I never had a problem.
To me Mantis mean big advertisement and waste of money.
Troybilt TB320BV will start but will not stay running longer than a minute or so. Im assuming it’s carburetion, but know very little about 2 stroke engines. Are there online diagrams or instructions available?
ANSWER : YES, go to your small engine store and pick up a book on two cycle engines, or go to your local library and possibly find the same book.
New pressure washer runs starts and runs for 30-45 minutes with no problems then dies and will not restart. Once it cools for a few minutes it will restart but will die again quickly. If it is allowed to sit for 30+ minutes it will run for another half hour but then dies again. Changed oil, gas, checked all obvious areas. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : Try removing the carb bowl and check for dirt/water etc , also if the machine is over heating it may be getting vapour locked
It won’t stay running. have cleaned the gas tank and it just had a tune up. runs fine then gets rough and quits. If I push the bulb it smooths out and runs fine for a couple of minutes and then begins hesitating again. Now today it ran for about 15 min. and now it won’t start. It wants to. runs for a couple of seconds 5-10 and then quits.
ANSWER : Remove the float bowl and empty the contents out clean and replace
