Level the mower deck to ensure grass cutting height is even across the width of the deck. This will help ensure a smooth and seamless side-by-side blend between each row of freshly cut grass.
Aside from a deck adjustment gear, your mower may have a linkage that helps adjust the deck height. The linkage has a nut that you can tighten to raise the deck and loosen to lower the deck. If the metal linkage becomes damaged or seized, and you can`t make these adjustments, a new linkage is required.
For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the height of the deck rear to the height of the deck front.
Deeper decks generally mean larger capacity, better cut quality and more power required. High lift blades mean better cut quality, higher noise levels and more power required. Heavy gauge decks last longer before they wear through. Good reinforcements provide protection against impacts with turf and other objects.
The majority of lawn mowers only cut down to 1.5 inches but warm season lawns often need to be cut lower. While many use reel mowers some still want to use a rotary mower.
Mower deck gauge wheels should be properly adjusted to prevent scalping grass on uneven terrain. The bottom of the wheels should sit approximately 1/8-1/2 of an inch from the ground, depending on your cutting height.
The first step to a beautiful lawn is a level mower deck. Level your mower deck once or twice a season.
Turn the adjusting lock nut clockwise to raise the mower and counterclockwise to lower it. Measure from the blade to the ground again on both sides and adjust until the difference between the blade tip heights are within ⅛ -inch. Rotate the blades so that their direction is now front to back.
Pull 4 pins and raise it up or down. Simple. I don`t change the height of cut all the time, but I do several times throughout the season and I couldn`t imagine having to mess with a fixed deck.
On ships with more than one level, `deck` refers to the level itself. The actual floor surface is called the sole; the term `deck` refers to a structural member tying the ships frames or ribs together over the keel.
What is the required Deck Footing Depth? Deck footing must be a minimum 6” (150mm) below the local frost line. We all experience winter differently and so the frost depth varies also.
For warm-season grasses, raise mowing height in fall as the growing season winds down to provide insulation against cold temperatures. Cool-season grasses are quite the opposite. Raise mowing heights during the hot summer months to insulate crowns against high temperatures and promote deep root growth.
For the last cut of fall, lower your mower blade one notch or set your mower deck to the lowest mowing height recommended for your turf. If possible, use a mulching mower and leave grass clippings on the lawn, as they can provide additional nutrients for the roots to store for use over the winter and early spring.
The fabricated mower deck is typically built from heavier plate steel and is a welded mower deck. The stamped mower deck is typically lighter and the mower deck shell is formed by large molds and presses.
Some may think that keeping the mower deck clean is more for the neatness of your mower, when in fact it has nothing to do with keeping the mower “looking good.” Not only will keeping it clean help with the performance of your mower, it also helps cut down on the spread of lawn diseases.

I had hit a somewhat hidden stump on the lawn..bending the blade. Took the deck off and replaced the bent blade. Put the deck back on and now the cut seems uneven. It appears that the deck is now uneven. I attempted to follow the directions for a side-to-side leveling. Started with trying to measure the blade height and am struggling with getting to a spot where I can measure the blade on the left side. By looking at the deck, it appears to be uneven. I am struggling with being able to raise the left side of the deck.
ANSWER : I’ve only had luck removeing the deck, turn it upside down. Measure blade, mark, remove blade, insert large pipe over spindle, bend in direction. Re-install blade, and do it all over and over till straight. Measure in several locations.

I have a problem leveling my mower deck. I level it at the sides and front .I use the mower and it cuts uneven. mower is deck is out of alignment. less than 1 hour on it.
ANSWER : The deck could be bent, or you will probably have to level the back of the deck as well. Another thing to check is the air in the tires, this can cause an uneven cut. Although the tire may look pumped up, with the weight of a person on the tractor can cause an uneven cut.

I have a 20 HP Sears riding mower with 42″ deck. Something has caused the right side of the deck to sit lower. It literally sits on the ground when lower to #1 position.
ANSWER : There are deck leveling adjustment bars located on most lawn tractors, most are equipped with a large plastic wing nut. There will be one on each side, with the mower off, lower the deck to the lowest position, loosen the wing nuts on each side, then re-tightnen. There is also a possibility if this is not the way your deck is levelled, there will be a deck hang wire/rod, however those are usually found on zero turn style mowers.

How do you level the deck on a z series zero turn husqvarna mower
ANSWER : The owner’s manual is the best place for this information. However, when setting, make sure you measure blade tip to blade tip not the lip of the deck. Also, set between 1/8″ to 3/8″ drop in the front for proper function.

My husqvarna zero turn mower has an auto safety shut off. I have isolated 3 (Brake, Left control level, and Right contol lever)trying to see which one was faulty, but I’m not sure where to go next. When I took the brake off, the mower stalled so I held the safety button down and when the brake was off the engine stayed running. But when I pulled the Left or Right Control level to move, it shut off, so I held those down to see if I could see which one was faulty. The engine stayed running, so I couldn’t figure out which one was bad. Every thing stayed running until I engaged the mower deck, and then it shut down again. I gave up at that point and figured I needed an experts help! Thanks, Jon Sable
ANSWER : There should be a switch under the seat. The system is designed to stop all functions if no one is setting in the seat. I believe the seat switch has failed.

What causes JD 260 riding mower to start dying when you engage the mower deck? It runs fine when you disengage the mower deck.
ANSWER : It’s the safety system that causes this. There is a switch under the seat that should activate when you are sitting in the seat. The switch can come loose or fail, the mounting can break, or the wires can come loose – any of these would cause the “engine dies when I engage the mower deck” behavior. Lift the seat, examine the switch. Rmove the switch and keep the plunger in with a piece of tape. Fixed? Then it’s just the mounting or adjustment. Not fixed? It’s the switch itself or the wires or connectors to it.
