The deck belt on your riding lawn mower connects the crank shaft to the lawn mower blades, causing them to turn. If you notice cracks forming in the rubber, consider changing your deck belt. To avoid interruption while mowing, change the deck belt before it breaks.
To measure the width, a measuring tape can be used to measure the length of the belt from one side to the other. The thickness of the belt is typically measured with a caliper or micrometer. Once the length, width and thickness are determined, the correct size belt can be purchased to fit the lawn mower.

Automotive belts start with either 4L (12.5mm wide) or 3L (9.5mm). The number following it is the outside length of the belt in tenths of inches. The inside length of the belt is typically 2″ less for a 4L belt, and 1-1/2″ less for a 3L belt. An example would be 4L460, which would be 46″ long outside, 44″ inside.
The “Deck Belt” goes around the pulleys right above the blades on the deck and then to a double pulley. The “Drive Belt” on your mower goes from the transmission, around an Idler pulley then over to the double pulley I mentioned before. The Drive belt also plays a role in making the wheels turn.
The blade drive belt connects the engine pulley to the mower deck pulleys and spins the cutting blades.
A perfectly tight mower belt can rotate without slipping off but not cause the engine to over-exert and overheat. If the belt does not slip off while working and is not producing unfavorable sounds that indicate wearing off of the belt, then that is the perfect tightness for it.
