Likely, the brake ‘toggle’ mechanism that keeps the handle in one of two positions is packed with sawdust/dirt that prevents full travel in the release position. Make notes of how the parts are fitted together, then dig out the spring and other components, clean everything, and reassemble. You may need to compress the coil spring with ‘Channel Lock’ pliers, and tap it into the recess. WD-40 is great lube, but not particularly effective on chain saws. Make sure the brake band is not deformed in any way. Hope this helps!

If your electric or gas saw`s chain won`t turn around the bar, chances are that the chain brake is stuck. On some saws, resetting the chain brake is as simple as pushing in on the side cover of the saw`s body with one hand, and pushing the chain brake forward while grabbing the top handle with the other.
Chain brakes prevent movement of the saw`s cutting chain by applying a steel brake band around the driven clutch drum. Clamping force for the brake band is provided by a powerful spring.
All chainsaws must have chain brakes that comply with ISO 6535:2008 Portable chain-saws — Chain brake performance.
When using a chainsaw, you should always start it with the chain brake engaged so the chain does not move.
The chain brake is one of the most important safety implements on the chain saw. The chain brake stops the movement of the saw`s cutting chain, and is often used to prevent accidental acceleration of the chain when carrying the saw or switching cutting positions.
Inertia chain brake: Inertia chain brake refers to its activation with sudden, violent movement of the saw. The chain brake is actually dual-activated – it can also be operated with a push or pull from the hand/wrist. If your left wrist forces the kickback guard forward, the chain brake will activate.
If the springs are broken, the clutch pads won`t retract, preventing the chain from stopping. If the clutch pads are sticking, the clutch drum will stay engaged and continue to turn. If the springs are broken or the clutch pads are sticking, replace the clutch assembly.

Can’t keep pole saw running. It starts fine but when i go to do something it shuts down
ANSWER : It sounds to me like you have a blockage in the high jet. There are 2 jets in the carb a HI and a LOW. If you can determine which is the high jet turn it in gently while counting how many full turns and any partial turn and write it down. (example 2 and one half turns) Then remove the high jet needle valve. Spray some carb cleaner into the hole you took the needle valve out of using the little tube that comes with the can of carb cleaner. then put the needle valve back in and turn it gently till it stops again. Now turn it back out the same amount that you wrote down. It would not hurt to do the other jet as well…

ANSWER : Remove the chain bar and look just below the bolts holding it in place. You’ll see a small hole where the chain bar oil pump pushes out oil. Make sure this hole is clear then run the saw without the bar on.
Be CAREFUL of fingers!
You should see oil coming out of that hole. If not, you may need more serious work done with the saw (chain bar pump replacement).

I am assembling the chain saw that I bought online. There was some difficulty in taking off the clutch cover. Before I did that, I had disengaged the chain brake. Now I find that I cannot put the cover back on because the chain brake seems to be activated, and the brake is too small to get it around the ring to remount the cover. I cannot move the brake one way or the other to activate the spring-loaded mechanism. Do you have a solution?
ANSWER : Try Look at eReplacementParts.com and the parts diagrams
