Clearances differ for the two valves and typically range from . 002 – . 004″ to . 005 – .
A valve that is not adjusted to the proper clearance could end up with exhaust gases leaking past the valve or worse engine performance. Either of those scenarios could end up costing you more money than getting your engine serviced by professionals.
Check – Slip the gauge blade between the rocker arm and valve tip. Move the gauge forward and back and feel the resistance. If you feel a nice amount of resistance, meaning, the gauge is snug but does move when you push on it – Your good, no need to adjust this valve. If you don`t feel any resistance, start adjusting.
Valve-related failures are often due to factors such as detonation, poor quality or defective parts, over-revving the engine, or not setting or maintaining proper valve lash. These can contribute to or even cause valve failures, but so can sloppy machining tolerances.
Intake valves are opened to allow the flow of an air/fuel mixture into the engine`s cylinders prior to compression and ignition, while exhaust valves open to permit the expulsion of exhaust gases from the combustion process after ignition has occurred.
Use a ring spanner to loosen the locknut and turn the screw clockwise to decrease the gap, and the opposite way to increase it. When the clearance is correct, hold the screw with a screwdriver while you tighten the locknut, then re-check the clearance. There may be a self-locking adjusting screw with no locknut.

Valve Clearance Tips

Recommended valve-to-piston clearance is generally 0.080-inch minimum on the intake side and 0.100-inch minimum for the exhaust valve. The exhaust needs a little more clearance because it expands more with heat.
