How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Your lawn mower turning over but not starting due to several reasons, such as a faulty or disconnected plug, a disconnected spark plug wire, a clogged air filter, or a contaminated fuel tank. A faulty carburetor, a dirty cutting deck, or a dysfunctional flywheel brake can also cause this.
If your riding lawn mower engine clicks when you turn the key but won`t turn over, there`s a pretty good chance your mower could have a bad starter solenoid. Other problems, though not as frequent, include a bad starter motor, a wiring failure, a weak battery or a locked-up engine.
Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won`t start. For small engines, spark plugs typically need to be replaced every season or after 25 hours of use. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly.
If the plug is clean or you`ve replaced it and the mower still won`t start, the issue could be a lack of fuel. Either the carburetor is dirty and not able to mist the fuel to be mixed with incoming air, or no gas is getting to it to begin with.
If the engine starter motor turns over, the starter solenoid needs to be replaced. If the engine starter motor does not turn over once a jumper wire is connected to the two large lugs on the starter solenoid, replace the engine starter motor.
A dirty carburetor is one of the most common causes for a lawn mower not being able to start after sitting unused for months or years at a time.
Usually a rapid clicking noise is a good indication that your starter motor isn`t getting enough electrical current to engage – basically your solenoid is trying to engage but can`t make the connection.
When you have a bad starter solenoid, the starter motor won`t work. This means the engine won`t start when you turn on the starter switch or press the start button. However, if your vehicle has an automatic transmission, the engine could sometimes not crank because of the neutral safety switch.
Bad Spark Plugs

If the engine holds compression well, and the fuel system is working correctly, but it still won`t start, that tells us that your car`s spark plugs may not be working. The spark plugs ignite the air/fuel mixture inside the engine`s cylinders. It`s the resulting explosion that actually powers your car.

Your engine may not start if an ignition coil isn`t firing up a spark plug. It could be a faulty coil, a poor connection to the ignition coil, or a control module that`s causing the problem.
If you haven`t turned on your engine recently, your mower won`t start and/or you have to tug repeatedly on the rewind to start the engine, a damaged spark plug may be the culprit. These problems may also cause excessive fuel consumption, deposits on the cylinder head and oil dilution.
Crank the Ignition and Inspect for Spark Have someone turn the ignition so that you can inspect the plug. Make sure the spark is strong and blue in color. If the spark is weak and dull orange, it`s likely that it`s not strong enough to ignite the engine`s air and fuel mixture.
Engine Won`t Turn On

The most common symptom of a failing/failed starter motor is when you turn up your key and absolutely nothing happens! Yes, you read that right. This issue is often caused by a burned-out/ fused starter solenoid or motor.

The starter relay makes a clicking sound, but the engine does not rotate, which indicates that the starter motor is not receiving enough current from the relay. This may also be a sign of low or exhausted battery power. Only when it transmits enough current to the starter, the relay starts to work.
Touch the metal shaft of a screwdriver to both of the large terminals at the same time. If the engine turns over and starts, the solenoid is bad and should be replaced. If the starter motor does not run, the motor itself is probably defective.

If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.

ANSWER : I would put new plugs in change the oil put a new in line gas filter in. After this tune-up check for spark by leaving the plug out on the moter body crank it over if the spark is hot you know its a gas problem also check for any grounding by starting it at night then looking around to the engine to see if its grounding out. Try these simple things. Do not change anything on the moter without doing these things first. Good luck

My Honda lawn mower 3813 is general very easy to start and will start almost immediately when I turn the switch. However there are times that it will not start no matter what I do. When this happens I do not have any spark when I take out the plug and ground it to the frame. When it is starting and working OK I can get a spark. I think that there is a problem with the ignation system. I have taken it to the repair shop or dealer several times but by the time I get it there it starts and they are not able to diagnose the problem. Only once that I have had it stop when I was running it. the problem seems to be more prevelent in cooler weather in spring and fall. When I first turn on the switch I can hear the fuel pump pulsating very rapidly and the as it pumps up will slow down. Sometimes when I turn the switch it will pulsate very slowly, perhaps once every 3 or 4 seconds. I have become aware that when this happens it will not start but when it pulsates rapidly it will start. I do not think it is a fuel problem as I can smell fuel when I choke it and turn it over for a while. I am wondering if it could be a faulty switch or some other electrical problem in which it is not getting a full amperage to the electrical system? I would appreciates any suggestions.
ANSWER : Check to see if your engine has a low oil sensor. Most Honda’s have one. If the oil gets low or you all of a sudden have a bad oil leak, the sensor will kill the fire to the spark plug, saving your engine from running with low or no oil. Sometimes these sensors go out from time to time. It will be on the side of the block with wires coming out of it. Unplug it and check your oil again before doing this test. If your engine continues to run and does not shut off, this sensor is the problem. Good luck.

My Z5426 won’t start. When I pull out the choke and turn the key, gas starts leaking out of the exhaust system just before it gets to the muffler. Last time it did start, it ran really rough. So, I turn off the engine and then tried to restart and that’s when I noticed the fuel leak.
ANSWER : Maybe bad fuel, fuel line leaking, flooding of the carburetor, since it did start and ran rough I am assuming that the gas was left set and more then likely this gummed up the carburetor, you will have to clean/rebuild it. If you have a can of carburetor clean you may be able to spray that into there and clean it up, I would not choke it to start it as it sounds like it got/is flooded/ing. Good Luck Tim
