When I turn on my sprinkler system, I hear the pump start humming but nothing happens, it never actually clicks on.
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Is this a MQ3-35??? If so, it is most likely the capacitor. This is easy to replace. Take out the 4 screws from the push button cover. The capacitor is the white plastic cylinder with wires plugged in the top. Put the wires in the new capacitor exactly the same as the old one. Be sure to unplug that pump before you do anything.
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
Bad Pump Motor – If your water pump has a bad motor or low voltage, it may begin humming as it struggles to try to turn on and pump water. In this case, you`ll likely need to replace the motor.
If your sprinkler pump will not start, there are a few possible causes: The system pressure has not dropped to the switch`s “On” or “Cut-in” pressure (valid only if controlling pump with a pressure switch). Fuse or circuit breaker in your fuse box or breaker box has blown or tripped.
Low humming noises from a sump pump are often completely normal. However, if the pump begins humming louder than usual and/or is not pumping water, it`s time to investigate. First, check the vent hole for a clog and clean it out if needed. If this doesn`t help, you may have a stuck check valve.
Some of the most common reasons are that: You might have a bad capacitor. Debris might be blocking the impeller and consequently disabling the pool pump. There might be problems with the motor shaft.
This could be an indication that the motor is overloaded. If the pump is buzzing you should turn it off straight away before the motor burns out. Usually, the capacitor has failed to result in the buzzing sound. The capacitor is what serves the motor power.
Watch out: if an electric motor hums and won`t start, turn it off immediately to avoid further damage or unsafe conditions. ELECTRIC MOTOR DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE. Often the problem is a bad start capacitor. Also check the motor temperature and current draw.
Air Lock. If you are experiencing no flow and any unusually loud sounds or hums coming from your water pump, this could be due to Vapour lock is when air gets trapped inside your pump. These pumps are not made to push air out, so an air bubble will get trapped.
Sump Pump Humming
Another cause could be a clog somewhere in the line, most commonly at the pump. This can be fixed by removing the sump pump, removing its bottom plate, and clearing any debris. If the problem persists, call a licensed plumber, as the problem is probably further down the line.
One of the most common causes of sump pump failure is the motor getting jammed or blocked by small rocks, pebbles, dirt and debris that collect in the pump over time. So, cleaning out the debris can solve many problems and extend your sump pump`s life.
Finally, if you hear a high-pitched whining noise that comes from the front of your vehicle`s engine, it could be a sign that the water pump is dying. The water pump uses a pulley or belt in its operation, and if this pulley is too loose, it will make a whining sound that some describe as harmonic buzzing.
If the pump starts to make a loud banging noise or is vibrating excessively, then you likely have an airlock. The air is making the pump work harder and the banging is caused by the pump stopping and starting repetitively. If you`ve noticed a sudden drop in your water pressure, this is again probably an airlock.

Sump pump hums and then kicks breaker. Will not pump. I cleaned everything, still have problem
ANSWER : Pump motor is jammed causing overload and resulting breaker trip. Try to turn the pump shaft by hand, it should be very easy to turn. If there’s any resistance check for blockage.
The noise sounds like a much louder humming sound; Temperatures were well below freezing here last night
ANSWER : I’m not sure what your humming is much louder than. But if you had a freeze your pump may have froze and you will need to ck for leaks after thawing. You could have cracked your pump or hurt the seals. After you check for this, you can check for a weak start capacitor in your motor, as the cold can affect these also. Good luck.
My utility pump hums but the impeller doesn’t turn,if I turn the impeller by hand it sometimes will turn. Can this be repaired?
ANSWER : Probably easier and cheaper to just replace the pump
My pool pump makes a buzzing noise but there is no water circulating into the pool and no suction what-soever. What could be the problem?
ANSWER : First, Check your voltage at the terminal with a voltmeter. If it is within 10% of what is stated on the name plate, try the following suggestions. If is is more than 10% off, call an electrician. Common problems that cause this humming with no suction in these pool pumps are:-Take the pump apart and look for rubbing that could be causing your pump to tighten up. -Check for a seized motor. If the motor has seized up, you will have to have it repaired or replaced.-It could be a winding switch or capacitor problem. Again, a pro will have to service it.
Little Giant stopped working; makes hum noise but wont push wate
ANSWER : Can you take it out of where it is and clean it with vinegar? There may be calcium built up in it. I have one also on my aquarium and when I turn it off sometimes it won’t start back up, just humms.. That tells me it’s time to clean it.
Waterfall pump hums but won’t pump
ANSWER : This sure sounds if the impeller is blocked and not being able to turn ,Dont let it run this way , can dammage motor of pump , remove intake cover (unplugged) and wash out with garden hose real well , see if impeller (black plastic blade) can turn with your finger (unplugged) , should move easy ! this might be an indacation of need for a filter on pump inlet !!!
My pump is making a loud humming noise and when I turned it on would not come on , just hummed. Tried again later and eventually came on but still making noise. Do I need a new pump. It is about 5 years old. I have an indoor pool so not in the cold weather
ANSWER : My Sunterra pump made that noise and I had a problem getting it to come back on after unpluggin to clean pre-filter each time. It was not long after that the plastic impeller sheared in pieces (the pump was only 1 year old and thankfully under warranty) My guess is that this is fixing to happen to yours as well. You are lucky to get 5 years. There was no reason for mine to come aparts. Uunterra sent me a replacement pump which had been slightly re-designed of the same 2000 gl size and the new one jsut did the same thing (only 2 1/2 months old) I called them again which in the meantime will mean my pond going witout filtration once again. I am getting very upset about this and will be looking for a good deal on a different brand pump.
I have a 1/2 hp pump which I use to pump lake water to my irrigation system. The pump takes too long to turn on when the spicket is opened and sometimes too long to shut off when the water spicket is turned off. It has a pressure tank .
ANSWER : When using the spicket you use less flow than your irrigation system so a delay in the pump coming on is normal…otherwise if you are having the same problem when the irrigation is running..a pressure switch adjustment may be necessary…please follow the manufacturer instructions for your pressure switch.
