The gap setting is different for each vehicle but most are somewhere between 0.028″ and . 060″. Consult the owner`s manual or Champion ® catalog to find the recommended setting for the vehicle you`re working on.
The engine model number is printed on a plate bolted to the side of the engine block. Take the engine information to the store to match up with the correct spark plug size.
One of the key factors that makes a spark plug work well, or not, is the size of the gap between the electrodes. If the gap is too small, the spark will likely be too weak and cause the engine to run poorly or with poor efficiency.
Many think the larger the gap, the better. However, if the gap is too large, and the ignition system can`t provide the voltage needed to spark across the gap, or turbulence in the combustion chamber blows out the spark, misfires will occur.
Today`s spark plugs come pre-gapped, but it`s a good idea to double check this before installation. Use a gap tool and make sure the gap matches the specs for your machine. Screw the new spark plug in by hand for 4 to 5 turns.
Common armature gap ranges are . 006 – . 010″ and . 010 – .
A smaller gap will yield a short, intense spark and will usually make the engine real responsive. A wide gap creates a longer spark arc but without sufficient “juice” from your ignition system, (including amps), it can be weak and yellow in color.
A smaller gap ensures the spark plug fires on each cycle. But if the spark gap is too small, there won`t be enough room for the airfuel mixture between the ground electrode and center electrode. So when the spark plug fires, there`s a possibility that nothing ignites.
Gapping fine-wire spark plugs

While most NGK spark plugs are pre-gapped, there are occasions when the gap requires adjustment. Care must be taken to avoid bending or breaking off the fine-wire electrodes. NGK recommends a round wire-style or pin gauge gap tool to measure the gap.

These plugs are pre-gapped at . 044″.
