How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If the motor will only start with the use of starting fluid, this suggests you may have a fuel supply problem such as faulty or dirty fuel injectors. If you have replaced the fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator, we can reasonably assume that you are getting the correct amount of fuel pressure through the system.
A full gas tank and oil reservoir are the essential first steps when checking why the lawn mower won`t stay running, but the problem could also be a dirty filter, clogged carburetor, improper fuel mixture, or a dirty spark plug.
You can use starting fluid to help start a lawn mower engine but you should use it sparingly. Using starting fluid too often can damage a gasoline engine because the starting fluid heats up the engine`s cylinder to an abnormally high temperature.
If the motor starts initially but then won`t stay running, that means it`s getting a good initial injection of gas from the primer bulb, but then the carburetor starves off the oxygen it needs to keep combusting. When your carburetor is clogged, the cause is likely to be evaporated gas that has gummed up the pores.
1 Start motor engages but the engine doesn`t turn

The simplest cause of this sort of fault is a loose or corroded electrical connection. If there is a fault with the internal windings of the starter motor, bad brushes, or other electrical faults, the starter motor may lack the torque to crank the engine.

Using too much can damage your engine. Since starting fluid is highly explosive, the force from igniting too much of it in your engine can cause serious damage, such as cracked piston heads and bent piston rods.
Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won`t start. For small engines, spark plugs typically need to be replaced every season or after 25 hours of use. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly.
Can Carb Cleaner Be Used As A Starting Fluid? In simple terms YES it can be used as starting fluid or used on the throttle body. Although there is a specific engine starting spray if the situation arises where you may be desperate a Carby Cleaner can be used.
Starter fluids, usually spray cans of highly volatile solvents (ether or similar) should be sprayed into the air intake. It may take a bit of cranking to get the vapours to get through the carbs to the cylinders, but they don`t need directly injecting to the carbs themselves.
Hello, “starting fluid” is used to spray into the throttle / intake area when fuel is in question. A starter motor that isn`t working will only start from the motor itself.
Starting Fluid Substitutes

As discussed you can use carby (carburetor) spray as an alternative to starting fluid. We do recommend specific engine starting spray when available as the pressure is lower and the nozzle on the can creates more of a mist.

My snapper mower only has two forward gears and no reverse. the clutch is worn. Could replacing the clutch fix the problem or is there something else going on with the transmission?
ANSWER : Typically if your clutch is worn, you would experience some slippage in all gears. If your forward gears work, but reverse does not, you should be looking at a potentially more serious problem.

Snapper series 23 wont turn over and when you try to manually start it, the pull seems to be locked.
ANSWER : That suggests that your piston is seized, but that may not be the case. First, check underneath to make sure that you have not allowed a build-up of debris that could be stopping the blade from turning. Second, remove the plug and see if the machine (since removing the plug will stop you from having any compression to pull against) will turn over. Might be a good idea to spray some WD-40 or something similar into the plug hole to see if that will loosen things up if the first two suggestions have no effect. You can, of course, (with the spark plug disconnected) attempt to turn the blade underneath. That would move your piston in the cylinder, and, once it is moving more easily, allow you to use your pull start to get the machine running.
Hope this get you started.
