If your riding lawn mower engine dies when you release the brake, there`s a good chance the mower`s seat switch is broken or unplugged. The seat switch stops the engine when it doesn`t detect an operator sitting on the seat to prevent the mower from moving without a driver.
Grinding gears, starting and stopping during operation, and the wheels not rotating with the pulley are common signs that your mower`s transmission is breaking down.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die
By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.
A full gas tank and oil reservoir are the essential first steps when checking why the lawn mower won`t stay running, but the problem could also be a dirty filter, clogged carburetor, improper fuel mixture, or a dirty spark plug.
Clunking, humming or whining sounds are signs of automatic transmission problems. Faulty manual transmissions will also give off loud machinelike sounds that seem to come out of nowhere. A clunking noise when you shift gears is a telltale transmission situation. Have a mechanic look it over.
The transmission fluid in your mower should be changed at regular intervals to maintain the life of the mower. The HT-1000 transmission fluid only needs to be changed once every 1000 hours, as opposed to as early as 500 hours with other brands.
Three primary transmission systems are used in riding mowers and the various classes of mowing tractors. Mower decks are designed to operate at a constant speed – typically full engine speed. This means adjustments in vehicle speed have to come from the transmission, not by varying the engine speed.
Hydrostatic transmissions include mechanical parts such as a differential and a drive axle, plus rubber or metal hoses the liquid is pushed through. Failure of any mechanical component, a broken hose, or clogged filter will cause tractor hydrostatic transmission problems.
If your lawnmower will start and run with the choke on but dies when the choke is turned off, it may have a problem with the carburetor. The carburetor brings air and fuel together and mixes them in the perfect ratio for combustion before they enter the engine.

My snapper mower only has two forward gears and no reverse. the clutch is worn. Could replacing the clutch fix the problem or is there something else going on with the transmission?
Typically if your clutch is worn, you would experience some slippage in all gears. If your forward gears work, but reverse does not, you should be looking at a potentially more serious problem.
Either need to rebuild carborator or clean it ?
Most small lawn mowers have a carborator mounted on the gas tank.if you take the screws out and look it has a gasket and the gasket will be bad and need to be replaced also if it is a newwer model it has a primer bulb that needs to be replaced at same time.
Snapper series 23 wont turn over and when you try to manually start it, the pull seems to be locked.
That suggests that your piston is seized, but that may not be the case. First, check underneath to make sure that you have not allowed a build-up of debris that could be stopping the blade from turning. Second, remove the plug and see if the machine (since removing the plug will stop you from having any compression to pull against) will turn over. Might be a good idea to spray some WD-40 or something similar into the plug hole to see if that will loosen things up if the first two suggestions have no effect. You can, of course, (with the spark plug disconnected) attempt to turn the blade underneath. That would move your piston in the cylinder, and, once it is moving more easily, allow you to use your pull start to get the machine running.
Hope this get you started.
Parking brake wont release on a 310e back hoe, replaced the parking brake switch and that was no help
Sounds like the whole stop brake system is seized up. Lot of wd40 and elbow grease should do it.Good luck.

How do you wire a snapper rear engine rider? – Omega Rear Drive Wheel Snapper Mowers
There are 2 wires to the starter (If installed) the positive 12V DC must be hooke up correctly to the starter or it will run backwards. Then the ignition wire that goes to the run position of the start (on/off if installed other than on the engine) switch. Also the engine alternator output wire to the battery and the battery ground wire. (if installed)

Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.
Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.
I have had a poulan pro 550 series push mower for almost 1 year at the end of the season last year the mower would start briefly and then stop. i have cleaned out the air filter and that did not help.the mower started, i made one revolution around the yard 3/4th of the way the mower quit. I then primed the mower it started then quit and now it will not start at all. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do. Thanks
There is a little spring that works the carburetor arm. If that popped off then the mower will not run.
