In 1951 William R. Smith realized that the growth in suburbs meant that homeowners were going to need products to help them easily take care of those lawns. The first “Snappin` Turtle” rotary blade mower was produced and with it, the iconic Snapper brand.
History. The company began in 1894 as Southern Saw Works. Later, in the 1940s, as the McDonough Power Company, it was acquired by William Raymond Smith, who changed the company`s direction when the lumber industry declined. Smith recognized a need for lawn mowers and patented a mowing blade.
Rotary walk-behind lawn mowers are generally powered with gasoline and have engines that are two horsepower to seven horsepower. Riding lawn mowers, on the other hand, have 13 horsepower to 30 horsepower engines because they`re so much bigger and heavier.

My snapper mower only has two forward gears and no reverse. the clutch is worn. Could replacing the clutch fix the problem or is there something else going on with the transmission?
ANSWER : Typically if your clutch is worn, you would experience some slippage in all gears. If your forward gears work, but reverse does not, you should be looking at a potentially more serious problem.

Snapper series 23 wont turn over and when you try to manually start it, the pull seems to be locked.
ANSWER : That suggests that your piston is seized, but that may not be the case. First, check underneath to make sure that you have not allowed a build-up of debris that could be stopping the blade from turning. Second, remove the plug and see if the machine (since removing the plug will stop you from having any compression to pull against) will turn over. Might be a good idea to spray some WD-40 or something similar into the plug hole to see if that will loosen things up if the first two suggestions have no effect. You can, of course, (with the spark plug disconnected) attempt to turn the blade underneath. That would move your piston in the cylinder, and, once it is moving more easily, allow you to use your pull start to get the machine running.
Hope this get you started.
