How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Your lawn mower`s carburetor regulates the ratio of gasoline to air mixture. If the carburetor isn`t getting enough air, the mixture has a higher percentage of gasoline, which can create black exhaust smoke. It`s possible that a dirty or clogged air filter is preventing sufficient airflow into the carburetor.
If you`ve noticed your lawn mower smoking and leaking oil, it`s most likely due to a dirty air filter. The air filter in an engine keeps debris and dirt out of it, while the grass and dust accumulate over time. When the air filters are clogged, oil can leak into the engine and out of the exhaust system.
If white smoke takes a long time to clear when the engine is started, the shiny spots may be lowering compression. Black smoke almost always means too much fuel is being used. Either the fuel setting on the pump is too high, you are not getting enough air or the timing is wrong.
What could be causing the white/blue smoke from the engine? Blue or white smoke coming from your engine usually indicates burning oil, which can be caused by: Overfilling the crankcase with oil. Incorrect oil grades.
Overfilled oil reservoir: Too much oil in the reservoir can also cause a lawn mower to smoke. The lubrication systems in most mowers are not well sealed, and usually there`s an overflow oil reservoir with a relief outlet where excess oil can leak.
The most common cause of black smoke is a clogged air filter. Replace your mower`s air filter and this should resolve the problem. If you`re still seeing smoke, the air-to-fuel ratio may be off, in which case the lawn mower`s carburettor might need to be adjusted (ideally by a lawn mower repair specialist).
White Smoke

In extreme cases, you will need to replace your head gasket. At the first sign of white smoke you can try head gasket repair treatment to seal the leak before you do serious damage to your engine.

In the majority of cases, a lawnmower engine suddenly bellows out blue or white smoke because oil has spilled onto the engine. The spillage can happen if you added or changed oil and slopped some or overfilled.
