How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Typically, when a shear pin breaks, only half of it will fall out while the other half remains inside the auger shaft hole. To remove it, carefully rotate the auger to align the holes in the auger with the holes in the auger shaft.
The pin will break if the blade contacts a hard object during the mowing process. The force that causes the shear pin to break is prevented from being transferred to the blade spindle, and the deck shell, where the results of impact damage can damage spindle bearings and crack the deck shell.
Shear pins are designed to break in half if the auger hits a rock or chunk of ice to prevent damage to the engine. If the shear pin breaks, the auger won`t be able to turn.
Can I use a grade 8 bolt to replace the shear pin? No. Damage to the unit will occur if a higher grade bolt is used in place of the original.
Shear fracture refers to the breakage and/or disintegration of a material due to the application of a strain force on its surface. The force is generated due to the lateral shifting of intergranular layers in the structure of the material.
So, the answer is yes you can fix a lapel pin with a broken post, but the only way to do so is by gluing the post onto the back. It is recommended you find the strongest glue possible and also realize that it may or may not be a permanent fix.
There are three basic sizes of shear bolts, and it`s important to select the correct one for your snowblower to ensure it fits and works correctly. Brass 1/4″ shear bolts are most commonly used on smaller, entry-level snowblowers. Black 5/16″ shear bolts are for larger mid-grade snowblowers.
When you tighten the two bolts, the threaded part of the bolt experiences shear stress. When the stress becomes high, the bolt joint fails. This, in turn, leads to the shearing failure of bolts.

On average, an Auger Monster rotor can last ten or more years with proper care and maintenance.

Shear is a type of stress in which an applied force causes a structure to `slide` in two or more directions. Shear can cause a structural member to split vertically or diagonally.

I own a 2 stage snow thrower by M T D, recently, I can only move it 2 feet before I have to back it off because the snow gets clogged up. There is not an unreasonable amount of snow in there either. HELP
ANSWER : Hi, I will try ro help you out. It sounds as if you probably have broken shear pins on the auger, and that is why as soon as snow gets in there the auger stops. If you look on the auger shaft you will see probably 2 bolts. They are made to break if something like big ice or debris gets in there so that parts are not broken or bending parts of the auger. All you have to do is replace the shear pins. That is what I think is wrong. That is all I can think of that it could be. All the best and good luck. Happy to answer any other questions.

When you pull down handle, the machine will not ingage and throw snow.
ANSWER : I assume you are not trying to throw snow with a 22″ push mower. I would narrow your problem to the following items:Bad belt driving the auger.Broken shear pins in the auger unit or Worn out paddles that throw the snow. All of these items are replaceable.I recommend consulting a local dealer like www.arcolawn.com to see if any updates are recommended for your machine.Good luck

I have a 5/22 2 stage MTD snowthrower and from behing the machine, the right side auger is not spinning. The left side works fine, when the engine is off, the right side spins freely while the left is locked and will not turn by hand. Is this a broken belt? a shear pin? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dan
ANSWER : Your shear pin(s) are broken on that side they will look o.k. but are snapped off inside drive them out with a large nail or center-punch,don’t use a regular bolt to replace the shear pin as they will fit, because if it gets plugged again the gearbox will be your next expensive shear pin to replace

Have a 7.0 craftsman tiller the tines go into gear but the wheels will not engage
ANSWER : I have a similar unit and it will require getting into the gearbox which is not an inexpensive venture. Just to be sure though, make sure the shear pins in the axles are ok. Hopefully it is just a bent/broken shifter in the gearbox but a shop visit will still be expensive if you cant do it.

Snow thrower let auger not spinning with right side
ANSWER : If you look on the auger shaft you will see some bolts, they are called shear pins. They are there to break if something gets in the auger and jams it, the bolts will shear off to prevent damage to the auger or something else. What you have to do is replace the shear pin or pins on the side that is not turning. Hope this is helpful. All the best and good luck.

My MTD 10hp auger will not turn. I adjusted the auger cable by tightening the bolt on the handle. I disconnected the spark plug and checked the shear pins on both sides of the auger. They are both still there. The snow thrower worked fine when I last used it in
April of 2010. The snow thrower starts, and goes in all gears in forward and reverse. Is there a separate belt to turn the augers?
Thank you
ANSWER : Yes there are 2 belts one for the drive and one for the auger. If you remove the cover on top that is located between the engine and the auger housing you can check the belts. The auger belt has come off the pulley or is broken. Hope this helps you out. Best regards and good luck.

Snow thrower backfires and stalls
ANSWER : Back-firing & stalling is usually indicative of a timing problem. In small engines this can occur if the flywheel shear pin has sheared and allows the flywheel to change timing. Fix is to full the flywheel with a puller and replace the shear pin.
