How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

To spread Soil Doctor brand pelletized lime, set a broadcast spreader to two-thirds open, or a drop spreader to one-third open, or equivalent.
If this is what you meant, or those two spreaders are compatible with settings, you can use setting 2 3/4 for putting out 1.15 lbs per 1000 sq/ft, 5 1/4 for 2.3lbs per 1000 sq/ft, or 9 for putting out 4.6 lbs per 1000 sq/ft.
Next, using a drop or rotary spreader (never lay down lime by hand), apply the limestone to your lawn. Apply half while walking over your lawn in one direction, then apply the other half in a direction that is perpendicular to your first. This will ensure that every part of your lawn is covered with lime.
To apply wet lime evenly, you need a special spreader like the Sides Spread-All Spreader. Pelletized lime: You can spread pelletized lime evenly much quicker and mix it with other fertilizers. As it`s much easier to handle and disperse and compatible with more spreaders, it tends to be the most used form of lime.
This figure also shows that while pelletized lime increases soil pH more than calcitic lime when applied at equal rates, it also takes pelletized lime in excess to 100 days to reach a maximum soil pH adjustment. That is a over 3 months, or slightly longer when taking field environmental factors into consideration.
Generally, only apply 50 lbs of lime per 1,000 sqft of lawn or less during the initial application. If you need more than 50 lbs to fully treat the soil, then apply the lime in two applications. First in early spring, then the next fall or winter. Check your lawn`s soil pH every 1-2 years.
Experts agree that you can spread lime on your lawn anytime, but it is ideal during the Spring and Fall seasons and during the morning or evening hours. You may also wonder if you can put down lime and fertilizer together.
As a general rule, if your soil tests high in acidity, it`s best to apply lime before fertilizer. Soil with a neutral pH balance is the most effective use of your time and money spent fertilizing.
In many parts of the country, adding lime to your lawn is as essential as mowing it. Without lime, lawn grasses may be unable to benefit from the nutrients in your soil, including those you add through fertilizers.
If you apply it to your lawn, you likely will not see results immediately after application. So how long does it take for pelletized lime to work? Wait for a month or so, or a few weeks after your next rainstorm, to test your soil pH again. Ideally, it should fall into your desired pH range.
Determine how much lime to use:

The rule of thumb for raising your pH level by 1 is 40lbs of lime per thousand square feet of yard. But never apply more than 50lbs of lime per one thousand square feet at a time. Instead wait one year, retest soil and reapply again.

This is a Scotts Speedy Green 2000 model. What is the problem when the flat thing below the hopper quits turning to throw the fertilizer out onto the yard?
ANSWER : It’s important to have precisely the right setting. A little wide is better, because the product you’re spreading isn’t always even, but you’ll have to walk faster to ensure you don’t over apply. This is a notorious problem with those plastic spreaders – I’ve used them lots – and I find that if you stop suddenly with fertilizer in the hopper it instantly stops up. Backing up quickly, then jerking it forward seems to help most of the time.

Make sure you close the chute before you stop moving, and be quick with the chute release. Also, don’t fill it too much because when you run into this problem it makes it more difficult to remedy.
