How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Place your spreader setting on a low setting (usually one-fourth of the spreader setting range or less). Spread the material over a 50 x 20-foot area (1,000 square feet). If there is material left over, increase your setting. If you come up short, decrease your setting.
If you are using a drop spreader, such as Scott`s Classic Drop Spreader, and using a Yard Mastery granular fertilizer, you will want to set your spreader at a 7.
Drop spreaders are very accurate as they distribute even rows of fertilizer and grass seed exactly where you want it. It`s important that you overlap wheel marks to ensure the entire lawn has been covered. The rate at which you walk directly impacts how much product is distributed.
Drop lawn spreaders

These types of spreaders feature a bucket, where you usually want to place the seed, topsoil, and fertilizer. You will find them mounted on a set of wheels allowing you to move the spreader along with the lawn.

The numbers stand for an application rate. A bag of commercial fertilizer will usually have numbers for where to set either broadcast or drop spreaders to get the recommended amount of fertilizer laid down.
Drop spreaders tend to be a more accurate spreader. This is due to the fact that product is only released over the areas that it is rolled over. To coincide with this, drop spreaders spread more evenly than a broadcast spreader due to its spreading pattern.
Position your drop spreader near the edge of your yard and press the lever to engage it. Walk at a normal pace around the perimeter of your lawn to sow grass seed all along the edge.
Overseed and Fertilize

Spread your grass seeds evenly around the lawn. Use a broadcast spreader, drop spreader or handheld spreader. After overseeding, apply a lawn fertilizer that works best for your type of grass. Slow-release fertilizer provides nutrients gradually, for as long as three months in some cases.

If you need to get grass seed, fertilizer, or lawn weed and feed onto a lawn, you need a tool to distribute it. Tossing it out by hand is neither safe nor efficient — you need a spreader.
The first number is the amount of nitrogen (N), the second number is the amount of phosphate (P2O5) and the third number is the amount of potash (K2O). These three numbers represent the primary nutrients (nitrogen(N) – phosphorus(P) – potassium(K)). This label, known as the fertilizer grade, is a national standard.

I just bought a new Scott’s “Classic Drop” Spreader. I owned a Scott’s drop spreader before and the recommended settings on Scott’s fertilizer bags always worked great.

On Scott’s Turfbuilder fertilizer for Spring (yellow on bag) it recommends one setting for drop spreaders which was 5 3/4.

I drained an entire 14 lb bag with that setting before I was even 1/4 done with my lawn. Usually I can do my whole lawn and have some left over. I even returned the spreader to Home Depot and got another one and another bag of fertilizer and the same thing occured. I adjusted it down to 3 after a bit and still used the entire other 14 lb bag.

ANSWER : I am sorry that neither spreader performed as they should have. This is very concerning to us, and we would like to get more information about the spreaders, if you still have 1 the manufacture date would be most helpful to us. It sounds like you could possibly have an over-application of the product as well. If you could call us at 1-800-543-8873, we would be happy to discuss this with you. Stacey at Scotts.
