How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The fuel line may be clogged from stale fuel deposits, more reasons to cause your chainsaw to cut out when applying throttle. If a fuel line is cracked, it will leak gasoline and draw air from outside into the fuel line. If the line is leaking fuel, it needs to be replaced.
My chain saw starts and then dies what is wrong? This could be a number of things and is most likely fuel or storage related. Over a short period of time, fuel will become stale. If the unit is stored with stale gasoline, the system will become clogged or restricted.
If your chainsaw still starts and then stops working, check the air filter. Clean or replace the air filter if it is dirty or damaged. Another reason that your chainsaw starts and then stops working could be that the spark arrestor is dirty or clogged. If this is the case, clean it with a wire brush.
If the chainsaw won`t start, or starts and then stops and you find the spark plug wet with fuel mixture, it means that the engine is flooded (you will probably smell petrol). It happens when too much fuel enters the combustion chamber, possibly because you have pressed the primer many times.
How long the chainsaw runs before dying depends on how badly clogged the air filter is. In the case that your chainsaw runs for a while, then dies, it may be possible to simply clean the air filter to correct this symptom. However, a damaged air filter should be replaced.
The most likely culprit is a dirty or clogged air filter. Issues with your fuel pump or fuel filter can also cause your engine to idle then die with any throttle. If you have an older car, it could also be a bad carburetor.
If the carburetor is clogged, it may only work with the choke engaged, which is not a good way to be running your engine. Cleaning the carburetor and replacing some of the internal parts with a new carb kit is a great way to get your carburetor running properly again.
Bar track damage happens from wear and tear over time causing the bar track to become too low or too wide. Friction from operating the chainsaw will wear down the height as well as increase the width of the bar track, leading to situations where the chain can jump out of the track.
If your Stihl chainsaw starts up with a reassuring puttering sound, but dies when you pull the throttle trigger, there likely is an issue with the fuel, but the carburetor could need adjustment. If the saw stalls while it`s idling, it`s almost surely a misadjusted carburetor.
If the filter becomes clogged, not enough fuel will reach the engine for it to run properly. Because your chainsaw will idle, but dies when it is revved up to full power, it means that the filter is only partially clogged; it will allow enough fuel to the engine to run on idle, but not enough to sustain full throttle.
Generally, two-stroke chainsaw engines are built to conveniently run at full throttle without an engine breakdown. Therefore, running at any throttle speed below the full throttle is not advised. Cutting a thick wood or timber while running at a low speed or throttle can cause the blades of the chainsaw to become dull.

This might be lengthy but I want to give all the information first to try and find some help. First off, the engine is a 17.5 Hp Briggs and Stratton 31c707-0603-E1on an MTD Yard Machine mower. I had to replace the steering shaft and so lifted the mower up to rest on its back end. Not able to break the screw loose I got the grinder and cut off the screw but also caught the mower on fire but just around the gas tank, and steering wheel, no damage to the engine. Now the problem, since I put it back together the mower will start but dies immediately, almost as if it runs out of gas. A few times it has started and I have been able to mow with it for 10 or 15 minutes and again it dies. So far I have replaced the carburetor, gas lines, gas filter, new air filters, fresh gas, new oil, and new plug, checked the gap on the armature, replaced the gas cap, and inspected the gas tank for damage. Gas flows freely through the lines when removed. If I take off the air filter and hold my hand over it to block all air I can keep it running by limiting the air flow into the carb, but it has to be very limited or it dies. It always starts easy but dies quickly. I wonder if it could be a head gasket or burnt valve and will tear into the next but really wanted to ask advice on anything else I might have overlooked. Before I tipped it up it ran great so I have to wonder what happened after I tipped it. I am at a loss and appreciate any advice on this.
ANSWER : Hi, based on what you have said the problem is with the fuel shut off solenoid in the bottom of the carby (if equipped). Or the voltage supply to the solenoid. The solenoid must have 12 volts to it when the key is in the start and run positions and should click when turned on and off. The fire may have damaged the wiring or connection on the key switch. Hope this helps, regards Phil

I put new fuel in it and now it will start but not stay running when i put load on it. Maybe i mixed the fuel wrong. what now?

ANSWER : The chainbrake has actuated, you need to pull the hand gurd fully toward the rear of the machine until you hear the click of the brake unloading.
