Starts good , idles good , when accelerated revs to high , like the govenors not working
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
The throttle plate is spring loaded to pull wide open, opposed by the governor which will pull the throttle closer to closed when the limited or specified rpms are reached. If the governor arm does is not connected to the throttle bell crank(linkage broken, off, or missing), it can’t pull the throttle closed. If the arm does not move to close the throttle, the governor is likely broken inside the crankcase. or needs adjustment. The internals are a spool that moves based on rpm, pulled up by flyweights that has the external governor arm shaft ‘trapped’ in between the spool ‘ends’. The spool will move the shaft and in turning, move the arm to pull the throttle closed. You adjust the arm on the shaft so the governor can pull the throttle completely closed with all the slack taken up.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.
Most often, over-revving occurs not because of a deliberate attempt to push a vehicle, but rather as a result of missing a gear while shifting. When a manual car accidentally downshifts, a rev limiter will not be able to react quickly enough to prevent the engine from over-revving.
If the spring is set in the wrong position it can cause the engine RPMs to surge. Over time the spring can stretch out, causing the same engine surging. Often surging caused by the governor can be fixed by simply adjusting the governor spring. It usually only takes a small adjustment to correct the surging.
Surging and Lagging

Another good indication that your spark plugs are dirty or worn is if your vehicle experiences surges of speed, resulting in a jerking acceleration. These surges occur because your spark plugs are not igniting the fuel in your engine at the proper rate, resulting in an uneven speed.

RPM fluctuation is a common issue for cars with faulty spark plugs as they fire the fuel with the pistons. If they wear out, your acceleration slows, and jerking and misfire start occurring, which, in combination, causes poor fuel economy and vibrations.
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.
Higher revs equals more power, which is particularly nice to have, especially in a sports car. A simple way to go about creating a high revving engine is making sure the bore is larger than the stroke. A wider bore also leads to improved airflow at high rpm – F1 and motorcycle engines make for the best examples.
When you rev your engine, you place additional and unnecessary stress on your car and its engine. This is imperative when it`s cold outside—revving your engine before it has had time to warm up is especially damaging, as the engine`s oil hasn`t had sufficient time to circulate and properly lubricate your car.
Why does hunting happen? The most common cause for engine hunting is a blockage in the carburettor. Put simply, this restricts the fuel flow in the carburettor causing the engine to slow down. To try to compensate for this, the engine`s governor opens the throttle to allow more fuel into the engine.
Engine surging is usually a warning sign that your car or truck is having combustion problems. Since a vehicle`s ignition wires and spark plugs play a major role in proper engine performance, it is likely time to check your engine`s electrical components.
Often your nose can make the diagnosis: Flooded engines reek of unburned fuel. Park the mower on level ground, and wait about 15 minutes for the gas to evaporate. Then try starting it again, with the choke off.

How do you adjust high, low, and throttle on echo 3400 chainsaw
ANSWER : Ok, this is an easy job, and a quick tune up. First start up your saw, rev it some so it warms up. Next, make sure your saw idles, if not just turn up the idle a bit first before this. With your saw idling on the ground, turn the L screw about 1 turn either side of where it is, and listen to obtain the fastest and smoothest idle, that takes care of the L screw. Now the H screw must be adjusted while the the saw is at full throttle, turn the H screw and listen for maximum and smoothest engine speed. I sugest this be done with the chain and bar removed from the saw. After you adjust the L and H, then adjust idle to suit.

I have just cleaned the carb and put new fuel line on this saw. I also put a new primer bulb and filter on it. Ican get it started and it will rev up and then die like it is starving for fuel. I bough this saw at a yard sale so I don’t have history with it but I suspect it may have something to do with the high and low screw on the carb. How do I know?
ANSWER : Ok first the plug gap is around .030″. Next you have to have compression. With the sparkplug in you should be able to feel the “hard” spots while pulling the starter rope. The rope should not just pull out smoothly. Now for the carburetor. Start by screwing the hi and lo jets in as far as they will go. Gently screw them in, don’t force them or you will damage the needle and seat. Now turn them out 11/2 turns each. The idle speed will be adjusted later. Make sure that the fuel is fresh and has the right amount of oil in it. Now start it up and let it warm up. You may have to use the throttle to keep it running. Adust the idle screw so that it will run on it’s own. Now adjust the lo jet until you get the highest rpm, adjust the idle to keep it at a good idle. Now adjust the hi jet, you do this at full throttle until you get the hight rpm. Let it idle, now open the throttle, if it hesitates turn the lo jet out about 1/8-1/4 turns and try it again.
