Lawn Mower With Toro Power Tools

I have removed and sharpened the cutting blades for our Toro Z420. Is there a recommended positon for the blades when the blades are fastened back onto the mower deck?I suspect when the mower is used the blades will balance out regardless of positioning. Am I correct?
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
The blades have such a close tolerance tip to tip on a V belt deck that it makes no difference where they are positioned, On a 3 blade deck the center spindle is forward of the two outer spindles. So for that reason you still get a quality cut. Most all commercial units use a V belt and have a good quality cut.
Some john deere mowers have a timing belt with cogs like a car and their blades have to be in time
90 degrees perpindicular to each other and locked down and if you strike something then the timing will be off and your back working on your mower instead of cutting grass, and the belts are twice as expensive than a v belt.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

It`s important that the blade`s cutting edge follows the direction of rotation. The wings of the lawn mower blade will be oriented up toward the mower deck, and any writing on the blade will likely be facing away from the deck. If the blade bolt comes with a washer, its concave side will be facing the blade.
The cutting edge is the one that should always face the ground because it is going to cut grass. Unless your blade is really old, the side with the cutting edge will be visibly sharper and shinier than the other side, which will have a dull and blunt edge.
Proper blade installation is essential for mowing. Whether you are sharpening an existing blade or installing new blades, proper blade orientation is very important. If you install a blade incorrectly, your mower may not cut properly.
The curved wing at the end of the blade should point towards the deck. The cutting edge or smooth side of the blade should face towards the grass side.
For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch, or height difference of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the front of the deck to the back of the deck. Naturally, this makes the sweet spot about 1/4-inch of pitch, depending on the mower model.
The proper angle to sharpen the blades of lawn mowers is 45 degrees to keep it working perfectly. For mulching types of blades, the proper angle for the cutting edge is 35 degrees. Lastly, we have a high lift type of blade where the proper angle is 15 degrees.
Standard Mower Blades

The standard blade, as we refer to it, doesn`t have any altered angles along the cutting edge. It`s straight and simple. If you are looking to grind a 30 degree edge on these blades, you only need the Model 5002. If you want more angle options and versatility, check out the Model 5005.

The curved wing at the end of the blade should point towards the deck. The cutting edge or smooth side of the blade should face towards the grass side.
It may sound great, but did you know that most lawnmower blade nuts aren`t reverse threaded? If you check today`s market, you`ll notice that the majority of the lawnmower blades work in a right-hand thread or a clockwise direction.

I would like to replace the mulching blades on my Sears Craftsman riding mower with regular cutting blades. I can find plenty of sources for new mulching blades, but not cutting blades. Blade replacement I need to replace the blades on my HD145H42G tractor but am not able to find blades with the original part number. Is there a more up to date replacement number for blades?
ANSWER : Same as Craftsman or Poulan Pro. Aftermarket blades from like Oregon or Rotary are just as good and cheaper, (or should be, depending on the dealer) But, if you have to have the original part #’s 134149 (mulching) or 138791 (straight), you can get them at Sears and pay through the nose. 🙂

My mower blades disengage when operating.
ANSWER : Not sure of your question, but if you mean, they start when you flip the switch and then disengage but the switch stays up.. you need to check two things. (1) The out put of your alternator, read the battery with a volt meter before you start it, then start up the engine and read the voltage again should be a higher reading with the engine running. 12.4 vdc with the engine off – 13.7 vdc with it running. (just an example). Next will be your seat switch. There is a switch under the seat if you are not sitting in the seat the blades should turn off. so the switch could be out of its socket, or broken.

I need to get the blade of the lawn mower sharpened.Any tips on how to disconnect the blade fropm the lawn mower?
ANSWER : There is a jig that you can buy that makes this job SO much eaiser. It is a universal jig that clamps onto the deck and keeps the blade from spinning so you can use a ratchet to remove the nut holding the blade on. One name brand is called a “Blade Hog”. You should be able to find one of these at one of the bog box hardware stores.

Hope this helps,

Replaceing mower deck belt on 20 hp 42 mower model no 917275660. Got the belt on. How do I get the cluch spring back on.
ANSWER : Are you refering to the spring attached to the end of the cable that runs up to the lever on the dash to engage the blades? All you needed to disconnect was that cable on top of the idler arm that’s held in place by a ‘hairpin’ and the left pulley cover to put the belt on.
