Replacing a ripcord on your lawn mower is a quick and relatively straightforward job most homeowners can tackle. It takes less than an hour and you probably won`t spend more than $20 on parts if you have the basic tools you need to do the job.
Recoil starters generally include a pull cord wrapped about a pulley, the pulley being rotated by pulling on the pull cord. The rotational energy generated from the pull cord and pulley is transferred to the drive shaft of the engine through a ratchet and/or clutch mechanism.
The problem may be in the recoil starter itself. A tangled coil of rope or a broken spring may be the problem. In many cases the recoil starter is easily replaced as a single assembly. DO NOT attempt do take the starter apart.
The clicking noise comes from a part called the starter solenoid. The solenoid connects the battery to the starter motor when the solenoid is energized. The key switch and the safety switches in the starter circuit combine to energize the solenoid. If the solenoid is clicking, the circuit that triggers it is working.
Electric start (also known as key start or push button start) is a lawnmower feature found on petrol lawnmowers, which allows you to start the engine at the push of a button or the turn of a key instead of pulling a recoil starter rope.
What Size Is Lawn Mower Pull Cord? For most common applications, a cord should have a number 5 (5/32-inches), 512 (11/64-inches), or 6 (3/16-inches). We typically use 512 cord sizes for snow blower and lawn mower starters.

Pull cord stuck
ANSWER : First. Remove the spark plug and see if any oil runs out.

Second, If the cylinder isnt flooded with fuel or oil. Make sure your blade brake is releasing properly.

Third. Remove the pull starter cover and consider putting a very light spray of WD40 onto the spring housing from the underside and work it around…..the recoil spring may just be rusted solid and a little lube and maybe a tap or too with a rubber mallet might just break it free.

I have seen all three conditions turn an otherwise working mower into something that wouldnt budge.

Good luck and be careful. Dont pull out the recoil spring as it under tension and could spring out and bite you or at least make a mess.

I replaced the pull cord on an mtd mower. and now it won’t rewind the cord?
ANSWER : You have to tension the spring before installing the cord. Remove the cord. Put the recoil assembly in a vise. Prepare the ends of the cord so they can be threaded into place. Spin the pulley in the proper direction until it is tight. Align the hole in the housing with the hole in the pulley. Thread the rope in and knot it and pull tight. Slowly let the spring tension retract the rope. Cut the rope to length, install handle, knot and test.

The rope broke on my lawn mower and I am trying to rewind the spring, but was advised to buy a complete starter assembly, I need to know how much one is and where can I get one. I bought my lawn mower from Home Depot. Can I get one there?
ANSWER : If your rope broke, there was no reason to take the spring out. The rope can be replaced just by taking the rewind housing off, turning pulley to get rest of old rope out, wind the pulley (and spring) the direction the rope would be pull it when starting. Then , when it’s wound tight, back off to align the holes in pulley and cover. Hold it there, stick about an 8′ piece of rope from the outside through the pulley and tie a knot. Hold the rope and let the spring pull the rope back into the starter. an tie handle back. Take your housing, and spring to a shop. They can re-install the spring and put on a rope a heck of a lot cheaper that buying that whole assembly.
