There may be old or bad fuel in the carburetor float bowl. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and prevent the engine from starting. If the carburetor is clogged, try cleaning it with carburetor cleaner.

Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
Generally speaking, it`s not too difficult to pull a junkyard motor. Many beginners have successfully pulled an engine with minimal headaches, especially when they come equipped with the proper tools. It`s easier if you bring a buddy to lend a hand.
Changing a car engine is one of the more difficult tasks a home mechanic may ever face. Replacing the engine requires different approaches for every year, make and model, so it`s important to utilize a service manual specific to your vehicle when taking on such a big project.
Knowing you can expect your residential lawn mower to last you around 450-500 hours is helpful in the decision-making process. The closer you are to the end of the expected lifespan, the more you should consider replacing it if a large issue occurs.
Old petrol in your mower can go bad in as little as 2-4 weeks, so it`s important to only put as much fuel in your mower as you need, and to drain it before putting it into storage over the winter months.
Things You`ll Need
You have to remember that while a new engine will be nice, the frame, belts and components of the rider are all still old and they may not outlast the new engine. Replacing the engine does cost about half the price of a new rider though.
Replace the entire mower engine with exactly the same model
This is usually the most successful and straightforward option. The engine may cost more in some cases, but you`re not gambling that additional problems might be found on the old engine parts or that it takes longer than expected.
