How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

One way to remove the gas is to use either a hose to siphon off the gas or a baster/pipette to remove the gas from the lawn mower gas tank to a gas can. Alternatively, the fuel line connecting the fuel tank to the carburetor can be disconnected at the carburetor and fuel emptied into a gas can.
Ultimately, you may well need to replace it. Changing a fuel tank is a pleasingly simple job in that there are usually no specialist tools needed. However, make no mistake, this is a big, BIG job. There will be a lot to remove, a lot to work around a lot of things to be careful of.
Yes! If our technicians can locate the source of a fuel leak in your car`s tank, they can often weld or patch it shut. However, if the tank has a big rupture or is leaking due to rust and corrosion, repairing the fuel tank isn`t a smart or safe idea.
The safest method of chemical rust removal involves mixing vinegar and baking soda to fill (or nearly fill) the tank. Let the mixture sit until it bubbles up and begins to change color with the rust particles. Then rinse thoroughly to ensure it`s completely empty.
How long can gas sit in a lawn mower? Depending on the gasoline formula it can degrade in as little of 30 days. Properly treated gasoline can stay good for up to a year. To prevent this from happening, you have two choices: empty the gas tank or add a fuel stabilizer.
Old and new gas should not be mixed for a variety of reasons, the major ones are; The old gas degrades over time it should not be added because it has already lost it`s combustibility. It can cause sputtering. It might fail to fire it up.
To fully deplete any remaining gasoline, you can either drain the carburetor or turn on your mower. If you want to drain the carburetor, simply detach any fuel lines that connect the carburetor to the tank. You will find that some gas will still be inside. Allow this to drain out on a plate or pan under the tank.
As is the case with many internal combustion machines, draining gas is an essential step in winterizing your lawn mower. You need to drain the gas because it deteriorates. Leave some in your mower`s fuel tank and carburetor over the winter, and there`s an excellent chance your mower won`t start in spring.
For metal fuel tanks, the minimum that manufacturers aim for is 10 years of use. Now there will be some variance in how long each material might last individually, either coated steel or aluminum, but unless there is some external damage done to the tank then it will last at least a decade.
The national cost for a fuel tank replacement in 2023 is between $216 and $3283 with an average of $646.

I have a husqvarna 323L string trimmer. I stored it after running the tank & carb dry for about two years. I fueled it, then started it, & it ran for a minute then died like I turned the switch off. Since it would not restart, I found the fuel filter had broken off the hardened fuel line & it sucked gummy crap out of the tank & into the carb. Failing at cleaning the carb, I finally put a new carb on it & replaced the pump, hoses & filter. It has ran good till this year. I winterized it with stabilizer & left it with a full tank over the winter. The gas in the tank was gone when I got ready to use it this year. I filled the tank with premix, checked for leaks, then started it. It would run fine for about half a tank, start idling poorly (lean) then cutoff & refuse to restart till I refilled the tank. I finally found the tank had cracks & was letting pressure out of the tank & apparently this was causing the carb to lose it’s ability to siphon gas out of the tank. So I replaced the tank which came with new hoses & a filter, which I properly installed to the carb. It cranked right up, but when it runs a half tank, the carb quits sucking gas out of the tank. When I pump to prime the carb, it moves the fuel into the carb, but the pump never gets hard like it does when I prime the carb when the motor is cold. I have to keep refilling the tank, prime, & then it starts & runs until the tank gets about half empty. The new fuel filter is down in the gas tank properly, but It will not run after it shuts off until I refill the tank & prime. I’m baffled. New tank, new hoses, new filter, new carb, & I can find no leaks in the fuel system. It runs strong. The 323L is a two-stroke & it always cranks on the second pull from cold on a full tank. Any ideas?

I have a Poulan Pro 650 model. I need to flush the fuel line because I think the gas I put in it is bad. I no longer have the manual so I don’t have any instructions. Does anyone out there have any advice on how to do this? I need to flush the fuel entirely out of the mower.
ANSWER : First step is to take the gas cap off and tip the mower to pour the old gas out. Leave the cap off for awhile and let the rest of the gas evaporate. After you have handled this, pull out the spark plug and pull the started a few times. This will push whatever gas is left in the carb and lines into the cylinder where it can evaporate or spill out of the spark plug hole.

Poulan pro 42 cc, no spark – Poulan Pro 42CC 2 Cycle Chainsaw, 18"
ANSWER : Try diss connecting the earth cut out wire from the ignition unit and try for a spark again, this will rule out the switch and any trapped wires, re set the air gap between the unit and the flywheel to 0.3mm, if there is still no spark the unit is bad and will require replacment, they are normally only held on with a couple of allen screws, and either bolted to the cylinder or the crankcase.

I have a Poulan 550 158cc Push Mower. Two Model #’s 96132004200 and PR0550N21RH3. Two Serial #’s 0901075421770 and 011309M001762. The mower will run if primed then dies. The carb. is on the tank. I took the tank and carb. off and blew through all openings. Air was coming out all the openings. Still no fix. Can someone please help?
ANSWER : Does it have fresh gas in it, If so time to rebuild the carb, even though you blew through all holes there is a diaphram inside the carb that pumps gas to it, so I suggest you take the carb apart and clean inside out and replace the diaphram, the way you describe it only runs on primer, tells me the carb is not getting fuel. Good Luck
