If a pump`s seals are going bad, cracked, or dried out, they can form leaks. Air leaks in inlet plumbing can create very loud noises. Similarly to cavitation, it can ruin a pump if not corrected. Check all the connections regularly to verify a proper seal.
Why is my well pump running but not pumping water? If your well pump runs but doesn`t pump water, there could be air in the pump house (especially if you have a submersible pump), a clogged water filter, faulty valves, a damaged pump, a leak in your piping or a broken water line.
If your water pump has stopped pumping out water entirely while making this buzzing sound, there`s no cause for panic. The humming sound means the pump is working but there`s no water to move, so your pump is running dry. If your pump has lost prime, or is running dry, this is due to a loss of water.
Check to see if there is water in the pump. If there is no water in the pump, it may have lost its prime. You may have lost prime because the well has run dry, check valve has gone bad, foot valve has gone bad, or you have a leak in the suction pipe. If there is water in the pump, the internal jet may be plugged.
The pump may start to make loud noises if air leaks are able to develop. This can result from cracked, dried or broken seals. Inappropriate speed settings. If your pump is working faster than it needs to be, then the energy that is not being employed may be lost, and manifest as a humming pump system.
Rattling and grinding – impeller damage is usually signaled by an obvious grinding sound. Whether caused by debris or a broken assembly, the sound varies from grinding to loud rattling. Screaming, screeching – when pump bearings go bad the sound of metal on metal make a terrible noise.
Finally, if you hear a high-pitched whining noise that comes from the front of your vehicle`s engine, it could be a sign that the water pump is dying. The water pump uses a pulley or belt in its operation, and if this pulley is too loose, it will make a whining sound that some describe as harmonic buzzing.
FAQ for a Bad Water Pump

The noise sounds like a much louder humming sound; Temperatures were well below freezing here last night
ANSWER : I’m not sure what your humming is much louder than. But if you had a freeze your pump may have froze and you will need to ck for leaks after thawing. You could have cracked your pump or hurt the seals. After you check for this, you can check for a weak start capacitor in your motor, as the cold can affect these also. Good luck.

ANSWER : Your tank needs more air in it … do you have a air valve standard tank or do you have a tank with a rubber bladder? I suspet the former and your air valve is sticking.

Shut off the pump, drain the tank (which will replace water with air) and then restart the pump.

Cleaned and drained, reapplied air pressure-now losing water pressure and was a lot of sand before water stopped. Any suggestion as to what to look at????

Well pump Sta-Rite MSE-7 now and then won’t kick in and buzzes –I replaced the pressure switch-Same thing –Sanded internal points on top of motor same thing pump gets warm contacts in pressure switch don’t seem to want to open back up they stay in contact and well just buzzes works good sometimes other times just buzzes what do I do?
ANSWER : In the back of the motor you will find a start capacator. This will be a brown or black cilinder 1″ around x 2″ long. With the power off unhook the wires to it and note where they go, their will be two or three. You will need to go to a motor shop or a good pool store to get a new one. Then just plug it in and you should be good. If this dosen’t help than you may have problems in the windings of the motor and will need to replace it.
The start cap supplys a boost of power to get the motor turning. Once it starts then the cintrifical switch kicks out and opens the points in the back of the motor. When it goes bad then the motor just hums and won’t start turning. Be sure to replace with the same cap. The numbers you need will be printed on the side of the cap. Good luck.
