How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The problem may be in the recoil starter itself. A tangled coil of rope or a broken spring may be the problem. In many cases the recoil starter is easily replaced as a single assembly. DO NOT attempt do take the starter apart.
If a mechanic has diagnosed your engine as seized, unfortunately, there are few options readily available to you. Depending on the severity of the damage, most mechanics will suggest a complete replacement rather than attempt a repair.
Recoil starters generally include a pull cord wrapped about a pulley, the pulley being rotated by pulling on the pull cord. The rotational energy generated from the pull cord and pulley is transferred to the drive shaft of the engine through a ratchet and/or clutch mechanism.
Snowblower pull cord commonly snaps back because the flywheel shear key has broken. The shear key helps maintain the flywheel crankshaft relationship. When the shear key breaks, the engine timing is off, which causes the pull cord to snap back sharply.
Pulling the plug while the switch is still on and the motor is still running under load may cause an inductive spike created by the motor to get absorbed by the light bulb and burn it out. This situation also applies to any large inductive load that is connected in parallel with something more fragile.
A pullstring (pull string, pull-string), pullcord (pull cord, pull-cord), or pullchain (pull-chain, pull chain) is a string, cord, or chain wound on a spring-loaded spindle that engages a mechanism when it is pulled. It is most commonly used in toys and motorized equipment.
If the carburetor is clogged, chances are the fuel valve is clogged as well. Check to ensure that the fuel and vacuum relief valves above the generator`s gas tank are open. If your generator still won`t start, unplug the fuel hose and check if gasoline can flow through the fuel line.
An engine can seize due to running on low/no oil, overheating or succumbing to a broken timing belt. These conditions eventually stop your engine in its tracks and a professional technician will be required to restore function.
The primary sign of a seized engine is a vehicle that doesn`t crank or start. In some cases, the engine might turn over slightly (often while making abnormal noises), but it will refuse to crank normally or run. You might also hear a click or clunk noise as the starter tries to engage the engine.
These conditions eventually stop your engine in its tracks and a professional technician will be required to restore function. However, if an engine seizes due to rusted cylinder walls, you can restart the engine without professional help.
A starter malfunction can have different causes: Electrical connections faulty. Solenoid switch (engaging relay) stiff or faulty. Electric motor damaged electrically.

Hard to pull starter rope. It doesn’t pull smoothly. hard to pull.
ANSWER : Take the spark plug out–does it pull smoothly now? If not, the pull cord may be the wrong size or it is damaged and/or doesn’t rewind correctly. Does the machine have a compression release? If so, it may be plugged with carbon. With the spark plug out, pull the engine through several times briskly with the throttle open and the choke off to expel any excess fuel from the crankcase. Hope some of this helps!

When i pull the cord all it does is makes a clicking noise but doesnt start
ANSWER : You need to remove the recoil starter, There are two plastic pawls or (dogs), that engage the starter cup when you pull the starter rope. It sounds like they or it (the last one), came off and was ground up by the fly wheel. The only way to know is to remove the plastic, shroud and you will see if you have broken pieces of plastic, usually white, in there. If so you need two new ones and the clips.
