I pull the (rope) throttle cord and don’t get any resistane; just a rattley sound. Not sure where to check it further
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Remove the starter assembly and check to see if it is working properly. If it is then try turning the flywheel by hand and see what you get but my guess is you broke the starter pawls that engage the flywheel

If the drive shaft is broken, the string trimmer head won`t spin. The drive shaft is not repairable—if the drive shaft is broken, you must replace it. Need help finding your model number? If the threads on the drive shaft are stripped, the trimmer head will not stay on the shaft.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the string trimmer for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
If your RYOBI Edger isn`t starting: For 18V or 36V Battery models: check the battery has charge by pressing the fuel gauge. For AC models: turn the power point switch off and check the cord is inserted correctly in the extension lead. Use a heavy-duty extension lead no longer than 25m for optimal performance.
Worn clutch – Since the string trimmer clutch engages with one or more drive shafts attached to the trimmer head to rotate the head when the throttle trigger is depressed, a worn-out clutch may prevent the trimmer head from spinning. A new clutch assembly is relatively inexpensive and easy to install.
If the drive cable is broken or detached, the trimmer head will not spin. To inspect the drive cable, remove the engine assembly from the shaft and look to see if the cable is in its proper place. Reinstall the cable if it has slipped from its place. If the cable is damaged or broken, it should be replaced altogether.
The most likely culprit is a dirty or clogged air filter. Issues with your fuel pump or fuel filter can also cause your engine to idle then die with any throttle. If you have an older car, it could also be a bad carburetor.
So, an air filter might clog over time. Once blocked with dust and debris, it cannot supply the required amount of oxygen to your trimmer` engine resulting in power loss. Find the air filter, take out this component, clean and reassemble it. Replace the part if you cannot reuse it.
If the carburetor is new or has been rebuilt, you should set it to “factory” adjustment. You can do so by adjusting the idle mixture screws to 1.5-2 turns out, and the idle speed screw to 1-1.5 turns in. Warm the Engine Up. The engine`s running temperature directly correlates with proper air and fuel mixtures.
If your blade isn`t spinning while in use, consider raising the height of the blade in order to reduce the strain on the Edger. Start the Edger slightly out of the grass and drop in to position and cut at a steady pace. If the blade begins to bog down, you are edging too quickly; slow your pace.

Hard to pull starter rope. It doesn’t pull smoothly. hard to pull.
ANSWER : Take the spark plug out–does it pull smoothly now? If not, the pull cord may be the wrong size or it is damaged and/or doesn’t rewind correctly. Does the machine have a compression release? If so, it may be plugged with carbon. With the spark plug out, pull the engine through several times briskly with the throttle open and the choke off to expel any excess fuel from the crankcase. Hope some of this helps!

Chain saw won’t start – pull starter pulley hard to pull?
ANSWER : If it worked fine the last time you used it, then pull the spark plug and try pulling the rope. See if it’s easier or if gas shoots out of the plug hole. I’ve seen this happen when the diaphram in the carb goes bad from sitting over winter. It loads up the cylider with fuel and makes it very difficult to pull the rope. If there is no fuel in the cyliner and it’s still hard to pull, make sure there is nothing binding the clutch/sprocket. I’ve had chucks of wook lodged in there that caused it to bind the crank output, which resulted in a hard pull on the rope as well.

When I pull the cord, the string is hard to pull and recoils out of your hand about half way through the pull
ANSWER : Sounds like you have two problems. One the flywheel brake is not being released completely and second the flywheel key has been sheared. It is why the rope is being jerked out of your hand. The mower is out of timing and when the spark plug fires before it is suppose to, it jerks the rope out of your hand.
