How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The most common reason for the cord refusing to rewind is a broken or worn out recoil spring. This tiny spring hooks onto the pulley and is stretched out when you pull the cord; when you let go the spring is meant to snap back to its original position.
To make pulling the cord easier, shift the lawnmower height up to start the machine, then lower it back down to your desired grass height to begin cutting.
One way the starter cord can get stuck is due to hydraulic lock, which is caused by oil getting trapped in the combustion chamber. You`ll need to release the compression and the oil, so remove the spark plug and then give the cord a tug.
The problem may be in the recoil starter itself. A tangled coil of rope or a broken spring may be the problem. In many cases the recoil starter is easily replaced as a single assembly. DO NOT attempt do take the starter apart.
The cord is attached inside and rewinds itself after each pull. There are many different styles of these starters. Inside the starter there is a long spring that unwinds as you pull the cord. The spring then recoils its self and pulls the cord back into the starter and onto a pulley.
The pull cord mechanism on a lawn mower isn`t complicated, and the reason your cord isn`t catching is that one of the components of the flywheel starter assembly has failed under the stress of regular use. Typically it`s either worn or broken pawls, or a damaged pulley system.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
If the engine is not revving up and cuts out before you reach higher revs then you need to do the following checks: Fuel: Make sure it is fresh and correctly mixed (see `Starting Issues`). Air filter: Make sure it is clean and unclogged. Fuel cap: Make sure it`s hand-tight.
If your 2-stroke brushcutter fails to start, the simplest explanation is that there is not enough fuel: in this case you simply need to top it up. A 2-stroke brushcutter engine runs on fuel/oil mixture, which you can buy ready prepared, such as EFCO-Mix Alkilate alkylated mixture in a 5 L can.
Trimmer line does tend to dry out over time and becomes more brittle. Storing it or soaking it in water will help reduce line breakage and make the line more flexible. Be sure to deplete your supply of last year`s line before you purchase new line and begin using it.
The most frequent cause of a line breakage is through contact with something in the garden. Usually this is the result of the cutting head being taken too close to objects, e.g. garden stones, paving edges, walls etc.
Definition of A Recoil Spring. A spring that is placed at the rear of the bolt of a automatic or semi automatic gun, that is utilized to take in or contain the recoil.
Usually this is the result of the cutting head being taken too close to objects, e.g. garden stones, paving edges, walls etc. The cutting line must be allowed to rotate freely and the correct diameter and type of line should be used.
Here there can be two scenarios: The spool isn`t suitable for your trimmer. You`re not winding the line properly around the spool.
The clutch engages the clutch pads to spin the trimmer head. If the clutch assembly is defective, the clutch will not disengage the clutch pads, and the trimmer head will continue to spin, even at low speeds. If the clutch is defective, replace it. (Note: some string trimmers do not have a clutch.

I replaced the pull cord on an mtd mower. and now it won’t rewind the cord?
ANSWER : You have to tension the spring before installing the cord. Remove the cord. Put the recoil assembly in a vise. Prepare the ends of the cord so they can be threaded into place. Spin the pulley in the proper direction until it is tight. Align the hole in the housing with the hole in the pulley. Thread the rope in and knot it and pull tight. Slowly let the spring tension retract the rope. Cut the rope to length, install handle, knot and test.

Model 60520 cultivator. Pull cord is fully extended and won’t return. How do I get it to rewind?
ANSWER : I have a RY60512 and it did the same thing I removed the starter housing assembly and sprayed the inside with a lot of WD40 and worked it around and manualy rewound the cord by sticking a small skinny screw driver into one of the molded holes and just kept working it untill it started to rewind. I discovered that it filled up with water and the spring got rusty it takes a little bit of doing but finally got to work .also there are two spring loaded dogs that catch on the engine that needed to be WD40 as well. through research I discovered that the starter housing assembly is the same for both models and are still available.
