How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Primer bulbs do not work well if there is lots of air and no fuel. I spent over one hour getting my new boat primed. You might try running the hose and bulb to a can of gas (lots of things can go bad with can of gas, be careful) and see if the motor will fill and firm up the bulb.
If petrol is coming out of your primer bulb, this means that it is backing up in your carburettor and flowing out of the primer tube. The float-valve in your carburettor has most likely got stuck and just needs to be adjusted.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
ANSWER: The primer bulb, which is located in the fuel line between the gas tank and the engine, is used to fill the carburetor with fuel when the engine is started cold.
Depending on how often the little machine starts and its age, the inside of the bulb will eventually get gooey, causing it to stick. If a brittle bulb cracks around the seal, air will leak out the side rather than force fuel from the tank into the bulb, also causing a collapse.
There is a reason gas pumps have an annoying habit of shutting off. Gas pump nozzles are designed with a device on the end that turn off the fuel flow when the gasoline runs back into it. This is a safety mechanism which prevents the gas from coming out and spilling when filling up the tank.
Common causes include a dirty air filter, spark plug, and carburetor. To fix these issues, replace the fuel filter, clean the carburetor and spark plug, and replace the fuel if it is old as illustrated below.
An airlock is one of the common causes why your mower won`t start after running out of fuel. An Airlock occurs when air replaces fuel in the fuel lines. As you refill your fuel tank, you could push the air towards your mower`s carburetor, which keeps the new fuel from reaching the engine.
To check fuel delivery, remove the fuel line where it enters the carburetor and use a length of rubber hose to direct the flow into bottle or similar container. Fuel should pulse out in strong spurts if your engine is equipped with a mechanical fuel pump (electric fuel pumps are more of a steady stream).
Without a coat of primer, you`re looking at a splotchy paint job. Applying primer prior to painting drywall will give your finished wall an even, clean look.
Most latex primers dry to the touch in 30 minutes to one hour. But for best results, don`t paint until the primer completely dries—which can take up to 3 hours, depending on temperature and humidity.

A primer bulb is important because it helps to fill the carburetor with the correct amount of fuel.
How it works: Primer bulb is pressed and released. When released a vacuum is created and fresh fuel is drawn into the intake fuel line. The intake fuel line deposits fuel into the carburetor making it ready or “primed” for combustion.

Primer bulb will not take in the fuel in it seems block
ANSWER : A fuel system inspection is needed here. You need to check the intank fuel filter,(make sure its not clogged) the condition of the fuel lines,(soft, not brittle with no tears or cracks) ,the ventin the gas cap,(little rubber tube must allow air in). Foremost, check the condition of the bulb itself:sets in (primer base assembly) that has very small check valves inside it controlling the inflow and outflow of fuel. There cannot be any air leaks as the bulb on the carb and one mounted remotely from the carb depend on a vacuum effect to operate correctly. So some disassembly and acute inspection will be required.

I have a Craftsman Gold 6.0 mulching mower with a B&S engine on it that has been idle for about 10 years. It was only lightly used before that and I ran the gas tank dry before putting it away. Today I put gas in the tank pressed the primer bulb 3X and pulled the cord a few times without it starting. I noticed gas dribbling out of the little hole in the center of the primer bulb. It continuously drips and the gas is puddling on the top deck of the mower. Is this likely a problem with the primer bulb or something else? Thanks.
ANSWER : Sounds like the primer bulb dry rotted from sitting &/or the float is stuck in carb. If gas is indeed leaking from bulb. It will need to be replaced. While it is apart, clean carb inside & out with spray carb cleaner.
