I’ve got a 1 year old troybilt weed trimmer. The primer bulb pulls a suction instead of pushing fuel to the carb. I changed the original, but to no effect. I also disassembled the carb. I looked clean with no obvious damage to any parts. Any ideas?
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
When you prime the bulb it sucks gas from the tank with the small tube, any excess gassed pumped will be fed back to the carb via the big tube leading to the tank. If you prime it and the bulb stays pushed down, then you have a clog or kink. To fix , pull the small tube out of the tank through the fill hole. Pull off the filter on the end and put the tube back in the tank. If it primes, your fuel filter was clogged. If it still wont prime check the hose going to the carb and make sure isnt clogged or kinked.(take of carb and blow in it). If that doesnt fix it take off the bulb from the carb with two screws. The bulb assembly will come off too(rectange metal thing) Take off the two black gaskets, be carefull with them. Take off hoses from carb and bulb asembly. Blow carb cleaner in all holes and over surface. Put back together. If the carb wont prime and the bulb isnt staying depressed. then you might have a bad bulb or carb gaskets. Make sure hoses are not cracked, cloged, or pinched.

Primer bulbs do not work well if there is lots of air and no fuel. I spent over one hour getting my new boat primed. You might try running the hose and bulb to a can of gas (lots of things can go bad with can of gas, be careful) and see if the motor will fill and firm up the bulb.
ANSWER: The primer bulb, which is located in the fuel line between the gas tank and the engine, is used to fill the carburetor with fuel when the engine is started cold.
The fuel the primer pulls into the combustion chamber is a volatile organic compound — a solvent. Repeated use and extreme summer heat stress the plastic bulb as the gasoline softens it. Depending on how often the little machine starts and its age, the inside of the bulb will eventually get gooey, causing it to stick.
Air bulbs are made of plastic or rubber and eventually deteriorate, crack or break with usage. A broken or cracked air bulb needs replacing to start your weed eater effectively.
If petrol is coming out of your primer bulb, this means that it is backing up in your carburettor and flowing out of the primer tube. The float-valve in your carburettor has most likely got stuck and just needs to be adjusted.
Start a warm engine on a Weed Eater without engaging the choke to avoid flooding the carburetor. The telltale sign of a flooded engine is the strong scent of gasoline and no fire from the spark plug.
The bulb is NOT suppose to stay hard. It only delivers the fuel to the engine. Then the two check valves open and allow fuel to flow. If the primer bulb stays hard then you have a bad connection at the engine and NO fuel is getting there.
Placement should be considered first. The filter should be installed in the outlet line that delivers fuel to the engine, after the tank outlet fitting but before any fuel pumps, regulators, primers or primer bulbs, or other filters.

How it works: Primer bulb is pressed and released. When released a vacuum is created and fresh fuel is drawn into the intake fuel line. The intake fuel line deposits fuel into the carburetor making it ready or “primed” for combustion.
There are different types of gasoline primer bulbs, all of which contain various types of valves inside. Sometimes these bulbs become so hard it`s difficult to squeeze them; sometimes even though you can squeeze them, they pump poorly, if at all.

I have a Craftsman Gold 6.0 mulching mower with a B&S engine on it that has been idle for about 10 years. It was only lightly used before that and I ran the gas tank dry before putting it away. Today I put gas in the tank pressed the primer bulb 3X and pulled the cord a few times without it starting. I noticed gas dribbling out of the little hole in the center of the primer bulb. It continuously drips and the gas is puddling on the top deck of the mower. Is this likely a problem with the primer bulb or something else? Thanks.
ANSWER : Sounds like the primer bulb dry rotted from sitting &/or the float is stuck in carb. If gas is indeed leaking from bulb. It will need to be replaced. While it is apart, clean carb inside & out with spray carb cleaner.
