Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Look under the the left foot rest, there is a belt installation diagram. It will show how to install the belt correctly. It is real simple to replace belt, but the belt must be installed on the pulleys, correctly or it will fail, every time. Sincerely,Brad Locke

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A common cause of belt breakage is excessive grass clippings on the deck. Grass clippings can work their way under pulleys and deck covers, causing series problems. Make sure to clean off your deck after every mower use and follow manufacturer recommendations.
One of the most common reasons a serpentine belt will shred is due to it being old and worn out. As the belt ages, the individual fibers that make up the belt begin to break down and separate, causing the surface of the belt to become frayed and weak.
First, the belt is either too tight or too loose when it`s installed; which is typically caused by a drive belt tensioner pulley that`s damaged. Second, would be a damaged of faulty drive pulley.
Home and Garden Geek adds that you should be able to loop one or two fingers over the same belt when the tractor is off and the belt is “engaged” and pull it gently away from the pullies. This translates to one or two pounds of force. If you need more than two fingers, your deck belt may be too tight.
There is no specific time length that mower belts need to be replaced. Some belts may last longer than others due to different operating conditions. One thing is for certain though, the more the mower is used, the sooner you will need to consider replacing the mower belt.
If the timing belt snaps, they run into each other, causing bent valves (most common), cylinder head or camshaft damage, and possibly piston and cylinder wall damage. While it is possible that no damage could occur from a snapped belt on an interference engine, such a case is unlikely.
For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the height of the deck rear to the height of the deck front. Naturally, this makes the sweet spot about 1/4-inch of pitch, depending on the type of mower.
If you hear strange noises coming from your mower deck, it may be a sign that the spindle is damaged. A bad spindle can produce grinding, rattling, or squeaking sounds, which indicate that the bearings are worn out or the spindle is bent.
Belts that are too tight put an excessive load on pulleys, shafts, and bearings. Excessive belt tension will also wear out a belt quickly. Proper belt tension is 1/2 inch of sideplay both ways. Press down on the belt midway between pulleys and observe the travel.

A perfectly tight mower belt can rotate without slipping off but not cause the engine to over-exert and overheat. If the belt does not slip off while working and is not producing unfavorable sounds that indicate wearing off of the belt, then that is the perfect tightness for it.
The belt has a glazed or burned sidewall.

Look at the belt edge that contacts the pulleys. If it appears shiny, glazed or burned, it will need to be replaced.

Belt for self popelled mower keeps breaking? Cannot keep a new belt on pulley
ANSWER : Check that the pulley isn’t seizing up and causing the belt to snap, also be sure you loosen up the self propelled mechanismn by spraying down with WD 40, too much belt tension can cause this, but it rather seems like the belt pulley seizes and the engines drive pulley keeps turning causing the belt to overheat and break or stretch and come flying off.

Adjust the blade belt – Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor
ANSWER : Hi Terry:
As good luck would have it, I have one of these mowers.
As I see it, there are only two adjustments possible:
1) the for/aft positioning of the mower deck as determined by the length of the central front deck positioning rod.
2) the amount of tension on the spring that holds the engage idler against the belt. That can be changed by moving the bracket that anchors the spring.
I’ve had my unit for several years now and replaced blades, spindles, and pulleys (I mow far too many rocks) but never had to adjust the blade drive belt.
Hope this helps
