The power drive sometimes will not engage, or once engaged will not dis-engage unless i pick up the rear of mower & ”bump” it on ground. is this a case of ”stretched out” cable from the engagement handle? Have readjusted this several times. It seems to work for a while. The drive gears do not appear to be worn.

The pulleys in your lawn tractor are driven by the drive belt, and turn the spindles. If a pulley doesn`t spin freely, it can cause the engine to die when the blades are engaged. To check the pulleys for sticking and damage, first remove the drive belt from the engine pulley and lift the lever to engage the blades.
Belt-the number one cause for your blades not to engage is that your belt is either stretched or loose causing it to slip or fall off completely. Belt could have snapped also. When you are trying to process too much grass/leaves they could pack up under your deck and push off your belt.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
So can you push a self-propelled lawnmower? You can push a self-propelled lawnmower, it won`t damage the transmission in any way. However, it may be difficult to do so, self propelled mowers are a little heavier than a regular push mower.
An object or obstruction (such as an ant hill, clump of matted grass clippings or large tree branch) is jammed underneath the cutting deck or in the cutting deck drive system preventing the moving parts from engaging properly. Inspect for obstructions and carefully remove if necessary.
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.
If the PTO clutch is not getting power, if the clutch solenoid is defective, or if the clutch is worn out, the lawn mower blades will not engage. The PTO clutch is not repairable—if the clutch is defective, you must replace it.
If the PTO clutch is not receiving power, the clutch solenoid is defective, or the clutch itself is worn out, the blades will not engage. Since a PTO clutch is not repairable, you will need to replace a broken or worn out clutch with a new one.
One of the disadvantages of hydrostatic drives is that the majority of the oil stays in the loop and doesn`t return to the reservoir for cooling. One way to return some of the oil back to the tank is by using a hot oil shuttle valve.
How Long Do Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers Last? A self-propelled mower should last eight years or more, depending on how often it`s used. (Most manufacturers rate their mowers for a set number of service hours.) There`s no significant difference in the service life of a self-propelled mower versus a standard push model.
Most self propelled mowers utilize a solid shaft drive transfer system that turns the drive axle to both wheels simultaneously. If the drive loss is only in one wheel, the problem is likely a trapped, broken, or missing part within the drive ratchet or gear system of the non-functioning wheel.
