Pro Chain Saw 46cc 20″
The teeth are worn on my chainsaw. It looks as though the clutch must be removed to change this part. How do I remove the clutch assembly?

Yes there is a special tool to engage on the clutch. You can get it from the Poulan web site – I think it is part number 31112 – cost about $5. Maybe you can get by without it, by using a screwdriver and hammer, but the tool was easy and risk free. You also have to stop the piston, as the previous poster said. I Googled how to do this, and the consensus seemed to be that it’s easiest to stick rope down inside the cylinder, avoiding pusing it through the exhaust port. That worked like a charm. I used a hammer to hit a wrench on the clutch tool to break it loose.Many thanks to the original answerer for getting me on the track to solving this.

While the use of clutch control at low speed can be used to obtain greater control of acceleration and engine braking, once a car has picked up sufficient speed the clutch should be fully engaged (pedal released).
After bringing the engine up to speed in a gear, the driver senses the need to upshift. To get out of the current gear without using the clutch, the driver backs off slightly on the accelerator and gently pulls the gear stick toward the neutral position.
Generally, replacing a clutch can take anywhere between 2 to 6 hours. If you book in for the job, we recommend you should put a whole day aside just in case.

ANSWER : Yep they swell after a while and will not screw in or out!
Sand the threads down so that the circumference is reduced with a course file or plumbers cloth, chamfer the threads a bit on the edges. A new one will do the same thing after a while so just fix the one you have.
