Pro Chain Saw 46cc 20″

I purchased a used chainsaw. Started and ran fine when the guy sold it to me. When I got home and filled it with chain lube, it leaked out as fast as I poured it in. I removed the cover, chain and bar. The bottom of the mounting bar plate was sheared off and the chain catcher was also missing a chunk out of it. I can see the where the lube is leaking from when I removed the mounting bar plate. It looks to be about a 1/8 inch diameter hole where the lube is probably supposed to come out of. The hole is not threaded so it does not look like a screw of any type was initially in it. The problem is

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

What causes a chainsaw to leak oil? As the oil is pumped from the tank through to the guide bar, air begins to replace the space where the oil was previously stored. If there isn`t proper ventilation of the oil tank, a vacuum can occur and reduce the flow of oil to the guide bar.
The vent hole gets rid of heated gasses, so it may be broken. Flip the cap upside-down, and inspect the vent hole, which is usually in the middle of the cap on Poulan`s chainsaw. If the vent hole is broken, ripped open or clogged, the gas may leak in other areas. Replace the cap, and see if it is still leaking.
Are chainsaws supposed to leak oil? To a certain extent, yes. A few drops are normal, as it`s most likely residual oil from the chain. But if there is a huge puddle or if the oil obviously isn`t coming from the chain, then something is out of order and you should investigate further.
Symptoms include: over reving, overheating, stalling on acceleration, failure to idle, and worst of all, an engine seizure if the problem is neglected. When an air leak occurs, it often puzzles users and even some saw shop technicians because the symptoms of an air leak are varied.
Q: How do I mix gas and oil? A: Mix 3.2 ounces of Poulan 2-cycle air cooled engine oil to one gallon of fresh unleaded gasoline to obtain the recommended 40:1 fuel to oil ratio. Over a period of time oil will separate from gasoline.
Naturally, the chain of your chainsaw will need to be oiled well to function perfectly. To make sure that it functions well, grab some WD-40 Multi-Use-Product. WD-40 works great for both – rust prevention and lubrication.
This most commonly is a result of a dull chain and exerting to much pressure on the bar and chain trying to make the chain saw cut. This could also be either a lack of bar and chain oil ( tank empty, restricted oiler hole ) or an inferior type of oil that is being slung off the chain and not lubricating.
Leaking Oil Filter

The filter is one of the most common causes of an oil leak. Ideally, the oil filter should be replaced with every oil change. If you change your oil at home, you may forget this important step or the new filter may not be installed properly.

Common causes of oil leaks include degraded engine gaskets, leaks from the oil pan, or improper or worn out seals. An oil leak also can be caused by a loose or missing oil pan drain plug or deteriorated valve cover gaskets.
BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak seals engine oil leaks permanently. It is non-clogging and will not harm your engine. BlueDevil is safe and easy to use and is compatible in gasoline or diesel engines.
Even if your oil leak starts out small and isn`t serious enough to cause engine damage, an oil leak will always get worse over time – it never gets better.
What Happens If You Run a Chainsaw Without Bar Oil? If you run a chainsaw without bar oil, it`s likely that the chain will heat up and eventually break. This can cause extensive damage to the chainsaw and may even require a new chain and bar. It`s imperative that you use the correct amount of bar oil.
Bar and chain oil is stickier than regular motor oil, so it stays on the chain longer. Motor oil flings off the chain more quickly, so if you try Terry`s tip, be prepared to refill the oil on your chain saw more quickly than with regular bar and chain oil.
The best way to detect leaks is to use an ultrasonic acoustic detector, which can recognize the high frequency hissing sounds associated with air leaks. These portable units consist of directional microphones, amplifiers, and audio filters, and usually have either visual indicators or earphones to detect leaks.

Most modern chainsaws, string trimmers, leaf blowers and other small-engine two-stroke equipment recommend a 50:1 oil mix ratio, but some recommend 40:1 and older two-stroke equipment might even call for 32:1.
The fuel tank on your chainsaw is a plastic reservoir that stores fuel. The plastic can occasionally become cracked, and when this happens, fuel can leak out. There are several places on the fuel tank that can cause leaks, such as the grommet, the gasket, or the fuel cap.
Petrol powered chainsaws can be used in all types of weather. Be it blazing sun or a dull and rainy day. While you may be worried about using your chainsaw in wet conditions, the chainsaw is not the main issue. Sodden ground and wet wood can be exceptionally slippery.
WD-40 Specialist® Cleaner & Degreaser is a water-based, non-flammable, non-aerosol cleaner & degreaser with a unique bio-solvent formula engineered to be powerful yet safe for sensitive surfaces.
Use for lubricating moving parts, pivot points and bearings. Lubricate small to larger motors found in sewing machines, fans, lawnmowers and trimmers, drills, chainsaws, and other tools.
Information we found online suggests that Stihl Pro Chainsaws have a run time of about 2,000 hours. That means the saw would last you for a minimum of 5.5 years before dying. Keep in mind this time is rated for professional chainsaws and not for regular homeowner saws.
STIHL currently recommends that you do not store or use fuel older than 60 days, and preferably no longer than 30 days, even with a stabilizer.
The chain saw should be oiled before each cut. Manual Oiling System: Lubricate the saw chain by pressing the bulb on the oil reservoir cap twice before making each cut. Hold the bulb down for 3-4 seconds on each press.

I have a Poulan 20″ chain saw that keeps leaking out the bar oil every time I put it in the container and store it. What causes this and can it be fixed by myself?
ANSWER : Most chainsaws have an adjustment for bar oiling and its quite normal for a chainsaw that is stored for long periods of time (weeks or even days) to leak out the bar oil. This is normal for chainsaws stored for several weeks or more. Some of it may be reduced by adjusting the rate of flow for the bar oiler, read your manual carefully before attempting to adjust it. Adjust to too slow a flow rate will have adverse effects on performance and can lead to premature chain or bar failure.Recommend that if you are going to store your chainsaw for more than a couple of weeks, drain the bar oil back out if it into a container (strain it through a paper towel before returning to your bar oil can). Also, you really should drain almost all the fuel and then run it until it shuts off if you are storing it for a month or more.
