How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Peach leaf curl, also known as leaf curl, is a disease caused by the fungus Taphrina deformans. Peach leaf curl affects the blossoms, fruit, leaves, and shoots of peaches, ornamental flowering peaches, and nectarines, and is one of the most common disease problems for backyard gardeners growing these trees.
The diseases that are common on peach and nectarine include peach leaf curl, brown rot, perennial canker, and peach scab. Weather conditions greatly influence both the occurrence and severity of plant diseases.
To control Peach Leaf Curl, treat Peach and Nectarine trees with a fungicide in the fall after leaves have dropped. In the past, the disease could be successfully treated with either lime-sulfur fungicide or a fixed copper fungicide with a copper compound containing at least 50 percent copper.
Peach leaf curl is mainly a disease of peaches and nectarines, though it may also affect almonds and apricots. It`s caused by the fungus Taphrina deformans and occurs wherever peaches and nectarines are grown. If not controlled, it can seriously weaken trees.
This disease is primarily a problem on green peach fruit but can also occur on leaves and young shoots. It appears as a powdery white coating on infected surfaces, and new shoots and leaves may be distorted. It is caused by the fungus Podosphaera pannosa. Young fruit develop white, circular spots that may enlarge.
Remove the puckered leaves as they curl and keep them from piling up under the tree and releasing spores that will further infect the tree and its neighbors. Thinning the baby fruit to one fruit every five to seven inches will allow the tree to maintain its strength.
Hosts: Bacterial dieback of peach, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. persicae, sometimes confused with bacterial canker, has a narrow host range and infects primarily peach, Japanese plum, and nectarine. Bacterial canker of stone fruits is caused by two different pathovars, Pseudomonas syringae pv.
Symptoms and Signs

Symptoms are most obvious in spring and include limb dieback with amber-colored gum. There may also be leaf spot and blast of young flowers and shoots. The sour sap phase of bacterial canker may not show gum and cankers, but the inner bark is brown, fermented, and sour smelling.

Symptoms of TYLCV

The most obvious symptoms in tomato plants are small leaves that become yellow between the veins. The leaves also curl upwards and towards the middle of the leaf (Figure 1). In seedlings, the shoots become shortened and give the young plants a bushy appearance.

What does peach leaf curl look like? Diseased leaves are distorted with puckered, thickened, twisted areas that can be light green, yellow, or reddish to purple in color. Leaves later turn brown and fall from the tree.
Several other fungicides that are equivalent or even more effective than copper for managing peach leaf curl are ziram, chlorothalonil (Echo or Bravo), and dodine (Syllit) when applied at the optimal time. Ziram is most effective.
Some fungicides which are effective include: chlorothalonil, Bordeaux mixture, lime sulfur, and fixed coppers. You should check your local town ordinance for any pesticide restrictions before application.
Spraying in winter and again in early spring is your best bet of keeping the fungus at bay. Organic approved sprays such as Neem Oil, Horticultural Oil, Bi-Carb and Copper all work but we`ve found Copper to be by far the most effective against leaf curl.
Leaf curl is a fungal disease (Taphrina deformans) that attacks stone fruit like peaches and nectarines. It causes ugly puckering and distortion of leaves, often with a pinkish discolouration. Leaves fall prematurely severely weakening trees and greatly affecting fruit production.
Leaf curl can be controlled by applying sulfur or copper-based fungicides that are labeled for use on peaches and nectarines. Spray the entire tree after 90% of the leaves have dropped in the fall and again in the early spring, just before the buds open.
Symptoms and Signs

Leaves of such trees wilt, dry, and remain attached to the tree. Chronic infections, usually in the roots, cause reduction in growth and early senescence and leaf fall. These trees may be unthrifty for several years before succumbing to the disease.

What is peach leaf curl? If you notice the leaves on your peach or nectarine trees develop a thick, distorted, warty texture with bright colors like orange, yellow or red, you have peach leaf curl. Infection can also show up on fruit, with raised wart-like growths on young fruit that often drop prematurely.

How do you use roundup to kill a tree stump? – Roundup "" Weed & Grass Killer
ANSWER : Hello, I am a grower and licensed pesticides applicator (40 yrs exp).
Roundup lost the trade mark years ago,”glyphosphate” which is now marketed (cheaper) under many other names,
Will kill a live tree if sprayed on the leaves! Also will damage young trees if you just get over spray on the trunk while spraying weeds.
Also, kills grass as well as broadleaved plants.
To kill a tree you would need to spray the leaves, then wait at least a month before cutting the tree down. I have successfully killed a few stumps by spraying the live suckers.
Be especially careful of spray drift as the finer the droplets are the more effective the chemical is. Read the label!

Tiller will not stay running
ANSWER : The first thing I would check is the vent in the gas cap. If the vent gets blocked with dirt, a vacuum is formed in the gas tank; and gas will not get to the carburetor. There should be a tiny hole in the middle of the cap. Run a pin or needle down this hole and make sure it is not blocked.

There also could be a gas filter in the fuel line somewhere. This filter could be stopped up.
