D130 22HP V-Twin Foot Pedal Hydrostatic 42 Riding Lawn Mower
The belt is loose on the mower deck and the tractor will not move
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Most JD mower decks use a spring loaded tensioner on their belts. Make sure that the belt is threadded thru the pulleys the right way and you may find that considerable effort is required to set the tensioner in position. Be very careful to ensure that if the grip slips the spring flies away from you. I use the hook on a cargo strap to pull mine into position. Normally there is a similar tensioner on the drive belt for the wheels. This is more challenging to get to.
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
A perfectly tight mower belt can rotate without slipping off but not cause the engine to over-exert and overheat. If the belt does not slip off while working and is not producing unfavorable sounds that indicate wearing off of the belt, then that is the perfect tightness for it.
Mower deck gauge wheels should be properly adjusted to prevent scalping grass on uneven terrain. The bottom of the wheels should sit approximately 1/8-1/2 of an inch from the ground, depending on your cutting height.
The signs of a loose mower deck belt include the mower belt slipping, the belt coming off the pulleys, a stretched belt, excessive vibration of the deck belt, a high pitched noise, rapid signs of wear and tear, and a shiny and glazed belt, among others.
Set the cutting height to the correct position
One of the reasons for the lawn mower being hard to push is a low cutting height. In this case, the housing or the cutting blade is dragged through heavy grass.
You should be able to take a deep belly breath and then forcefully press your core against the belt without raising your shoulders. If there is slack when fully inhaled, the belt is too loose.
For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch, or height difference of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the front of the deck to the back of the deck. Naturally, this makes the sweet spot about 1/4-inch of pitch, depending on the mower model.
