Prior to this event it never had a smoking problem. The tractor had only been running a couple of minutes so it wasn't at all running hot when it made a little “spat” noise and blew copious amounts of white smoke in a matter of a couple of seconds before i turned it off. I see no water in the oil and the coolant level is where it always is. Anyone might know?
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Does this machine use regular transmission fluid? If it does, check to see if there is a small line (normally rubber) that runs from the carb to a transmission diaphragm. If there is, disconnect the line and tap it. If trans fluid is noticeable in the line, you must replace the as it contains a rubber diaphragm inside which goes bad eventually leading to trans fluid being sucked into the carb and though the exhaust which creates large amounts of white smoke.

White Smoke
It usually means that coolant is being burned in the engine, which means that something is drastically wrong. The most common cause of this is a blown head gasket, which can quickly lead to an overheating engine.
White or Gray Smoke from Exhaust – Just like if you see white smoke from under the hood, persistent white smoke usually indicates a coolant leak. If there`s only a little bit, it`s probably condensation. Blue Smoke from Exhaust – If you see blue or dark gray smoke, that`s an indication of burning oil.
White smoke usually means coolant is getting into the combustion chambers of your vehicle. This generally happens because of a cracked or leaking head gasket, which allows coolant to seep into your cylinders. In extreme cases, you will need to replace your head gasket.
Blue or white smoke coming from your engine usually indicates burning oil, which can be caused by: Overfilling the crankcase with oil. Incorrect oil grades.
Thick white smoke coming out of the exhaust typically indicates a blown head gasket, a crack in the head, or a crack in the engine block.
Vehicles often produce thin white smoke caused by water vapor and condensation in the exhaust pipe. However, if it`s not condensation, white exhaust smoke is typically caused by an engine coolant leak. This could mean a coolant leakage — going from the coolant system into the combustion chamber.
1: White Engine Smoke
White engine smoke is commonly caused by burning radiator fluid (also known as coolant or refrigerant). You might also notice a sickly sweet smell (often compared to that of butterscotch or maple syrup).
Thick white smoke pouring from the exhaust is usually due to a crack in the cylinder head, engine block or head gasket. This is caused by constant temperature fluctuations and a consistently overheating engine due to low coolant levels.

Mower start up and runs, but starts to cut back, and smokes just a little bit. The mower stops smoking when it throttle up. It will continue to run but not at full throttle. I can hold a finger gently over the fuel primer bulb and it will throttle up for a small time.
ANSWER : It sounds like she’s being deprived of the correct fuel / air mixture due to a dirty carburetor (the biggest problem with mowers when gas is left to sit for a period of time). If you do not know how to take the carburetor apart and clean it thoroughly, then I suggest taking it to the local shop (hardware store or mower shop) and having it tuned up. It’ll probably be just fine and worth the money. Hope this helps and good luck.James
