Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
I’m assuming that you are speaking of a snow blower auger. It most likely has sheared a cotter pin or bolt that couples the auger to it’s shaft. Turn the auger slowly looking for a small hole somewhere along the shaft. When found, hold the auger and turn the impeller by hand until the inside shaft lines up it’s hole (there may be a sheared piece of metal in the shaft hole). Use a pin punch to drive out any remaining shear pin and fit a recommended new pin or bolt. Hope this helps!

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If one or both of the bearings have seized, the auger will have trouble turning. You should always lubricate the auger bearings as part of your regular snowblower maintenance to ensure the axle can turn easily, but you may need to replace the old bearings with new ones to fully solve the problem.
If there`s a difference in track tension between the left and right snow blower tracks, your unit could pull to one side when driving.
A snowblower auger should not spin freely when the auger control lever is off. A free-spinning auger is a symptom of broken shear pins. Shear pins are a fail-safe feature designed to break when the auger hits a solid object.
On a cool grill, remove the grates, drip pan, heat baffle/shield, and hopper to see the auger parts. If the auger has pellets stuck inside the auger shaft and is not turning, it is most likely jammed.
A: Many factors affect the lifespan of the auger brush, such as grit, wastewater type, as well as the presence or absence of a grinder. However, 18 – 24 months is a typical lifespan that can be expected.
Shear pins are designed to break in half if the auger hits a rock or chunk of ice to prevent damage to the engine. If the shear pin breaks, the auger won`t be able to turn.
Steep or Unpaved Surfaces

Consider a track-driven, two-stage snow blower, which passes smoothly over gravel, grass, or other uneven surfaces. These start at about 24-inch clearing widths. You won`t clear down to the surface, but what`s left will melt more easily.

We recommend using a drilling bucket auger when faced with wet and muddy soil conditions because the bucket will make removing the mix of drilling fluid from the borehole easier. Without the bucket, the mud and liquid will fall back into the hole, making it nearly impossible to extract.
A broken shear pin is the most common reason the snowblower auger won`t turn properly so replace any broken shear pins. Worn or loose belts also prevent the snowblower auger from spinning. Check and adjust the belts and replace any broken or worn belts when you see the snowblower auger not turning.
If the auger is not rotating it may be due to the auger shaft being jammed, or a failed (burnt-out) auger motor. If the auger shaft is moving freely (see how to check that further below) but not rotating, then it is possible the auger motor is the issue.

On my cu cadet zero turn only the left side turns and the right side moans but wont move ever with the release lever to free wheel released
ANSWER : Check the hydraulic oil level for the hydrostat drives(if it has a reserve tank located under the seat. Some ZT’s don’t have the reserve tank. Don’t over fill that tank. 1/4 inch above the bottom is all it needs.)

Also, check the steering arm bolts. Very often they work themselves loose and the arm doesn’t pull the valve rod that controls the hydrostat unit.

My MTD 10hp auger will not turn. I adjusted the auger cable by tightening the bolt on the handle. I disconnected the spark plug and checked the shear pins on both sides of the auger. They are both still there. The snow thrower worked fine when I last used it in
April of 2010. The snow thrower starts, and goes in all gears in forward and reverse. Is there a separate belt to turn the augers?
Thank you
ANSWER : Yes there are 2 belts one for the drive and one for the auger. If you remove the cover on top that is located between the engine and the auger housing you can check the belts. The auger belt has come off the pulley or is broken. Hope this helps you out. Best regards and good luck.

My Z5426 won’t start. When I pull out the choke and turn the key, gas starts leaking out of the exhaust system just before it gets to the muffler. Last time it did start, it ran really rough. So, I turn off the engine and then tried to restart and that’s when I noticed the fuel leak.
ANSWER : Maybe bad fuel, fuel line leaking, flooding of the carburetor, since it did start and ran rough I am assuming that the gas was left set and more then likely this gummed up the carburetor, you will have to clean/rebuild it. If you have a can of carburetor clean you may be able to spray that into there and clean it up, I would not choke it to start it as it sounds like it got/is flooded/ing. Good Luck Tim
