We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

High grade 4-stroke engine oil.
Engines on most outdoor power equipment operate well with 5W30 Synthetic oil. For equipment operated in hot temperatures, Vanguard 15W50 Synthetic oil provides the best protection.
The oil tank capacity is about 0,40 litre or 14 fluid oz. c) If the oil level is low add Mountfield oil part number MX855 or a SAE 10W-30 oil, to the upper limit on the dipstick. Do not overfill; the oil level should not be above the UPPER LIMIT mark. Fill the fuel tank with unleaded petrol.
Is SAE 30 Oil The Same As 10W-30? No. Unlike SAE 30, SAE 10W-30 is multi grade oil. SAE 10W-30 has SAE 10W viscosity at a lower temperature and SAE 30 viscosity at a hotter operating temp.
While automotive engine oil, such as 10W-30 or 10W-40, can be used in a lawn mower engine, it is generally recommended that SAE 30 motor oil be used.
SAE-30 oil is often a safe bet for your mower, but it`s still worth referring to your owner`s manual since a lawnmower is no small investment. Since you won`t be mowing in the wintertime unless you have a landscaping emergency in colder temperatures, there`s no reason to use a multi-grade motor oil such as 5W-30.
There`s not much difference between 10W-30 and 10W-40 motor oil. What sets them apart has more to do with temperature fluctuations and engine load. For moderate weather, either engine oil grades should work fine.
Although SAE 30 motor oil is usually suggested for use in lawn mower engines, the safest option is to use the oil recommended by your lawn mower manufacturer. The same motor oil types used in cars, such as 10W-30 or 10W-40, can often be used in a lawn mower.
Lawnmowers don`t have the super tight clearances, compared to cars, that require 5w20 or 0w20 oil, etc. That I know of, 5w20 only comes in a full synthetic, or synthetic blend. Both are not ideal for a lawnmower. Stick with the 10w30 CONVENTIONAL oil, not synthetic oil.
It is likely that your Mountfield lawnmower will be powered by a 4-stroke engine. This means that the oil and petrol are stored within the machine in separate sections, eradicating the need for you to mix the two together.
The Mountfield ST170 engine offers increased power compared to the other Mountfield engines in their Universal range. Always use fresh petrol in your engine as it can begin to go stale within 4 – 6 weeks.
10W30 is a common motor oil grade suitable for many lawn mowers. Your owner`s manual will tell you the exact grade required, but in almost all cases 10W30 is the right stuff for a four-stroke engines. Any brand of oil that`s suitable for cars or trucks will work fine in your mower.
Can you use 5W-30 instead of 10W-30? Absolutely yes for car engines, 5W-30 is usually synthetic and superior to 10W-30. Both have the same viscosity at the operating temperature of an average car engine. 5W has lower viscosity when cool and is considered better for the car engine during engine start.
Car oil is similar to lawn mower oil, and you can use it in lawn mowers with four-stroke engines. However, car oil has a high concentration of additives and can damage smaller engines. It`s also important to match base oils; otherwise, you risk damaging your lawn mower`s motor.
Possibly the biggest issue that comes with using synthetic oil in a mower is that it tends to burn off faster, due to its efficiency. Combined with its higher cost, this could make for a decent money sink for the lawn and garden enthusiast with a mid-size lawn.
The short answer is yes, you can use 20w50 oil in a lawnmower but results may vary. That`s not the end of it though. This kind of oil is not designed specifically to be used in a lawnmower. 20W50 is actually a fairly specialized petrol engine oil formulated for use in engines made generally before 1980.
Most gas-powered lawn mowers operate with 4-cycle engines. All gas-powered engines need sufficient oil to run smoothly and they take the same type of oil to run as do cars. There are many brands of oil to choose but your first consideration is the type of oil that works best for your mower.

The recommended oil viscosity for your vehicle, according to Kia documentation, is 10W-40. If you drive the vehicle in exceptionally cold weather, well below 32 degrees, you can use 5W-30 oil but even 10W-40 is still perfectly OK to use if outdoor temperatures are below freezing.

The main difference between SAE 30 and 15W 40 is that the SAE 30 oil has a higher viscosity than 15W40 at high temperatures. The 15W40 engine oil is usually recommended for use in diesel engines, but, SAE 30 is used in small gasoline engines or as a general-purpose lubricant.
The main differences between SAE 30 and 5W30 are that the SAE 30 is a single-grade type, that can be used for small engines, and would generate in warm weather. On the other hand, 5W30 is a multiple-grade type, that can be used for larger engines, tolerating extreme weather.
A typical summer grade was 30. These oils were straight grade oils. A 10W flows well in cold weather, to protect the engine at start up, but it`s is too thin for use in the summer. A 30 grade oil, thick enough to protect in the heat, was recommended for summer use.
Effects of Using the Wrong Type of Engine Oil for your car

For example, a 10w30 oil is designed to be used in engines that require lighter viscosity while a 20w50 oil is for engines that require heavier viscosity. Using the wrong type of engine oil can have serious consequences for your car.

Lawn mowers are low compression so a little bit of diesel shouldn`t hurt anything too much. However, there is a risk that it will cause the mower to smoke rather badly. The best thing to do is to drain your tank immediately, refill it with gas and replace the fuel filter.
SAE 30 is the most common type of oil for small engines and is best suited for work under warmer temperatures. SAE 10W-30 has a much wider temperature range than SAE 30 and can improve cold-weather starting, though that may lead to a greater consumption of oil.

Dont know what type of oil to use – Toro Power Lawn Mower
ANSWER : Put straight 30 weight motor oil in it. Not 10W30 or any multi-viscosity oil. Straight 30 weight motor oil. If you’re doing a complete oil change, then you may want to use Synthetic 30 weight, which will last longer between oil changes and also make your engine last longer (but it costs more too). Best of luck to you.James
