Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Depending on the make and model, there may be an ignition ground. It is connected to the manual throttle linkage and kills the coil when the throttle lever is placed in the stop position.
– Many of the newer mowers do not have the ignition ground and rely on the friction from the safety brake to stop the engine. If that is the type you have and there is no spark at the plug then the problem will probably be with the coil, or the timing.
– I would first try re-checking the spark by removing the spark plug, re-connecting the lead, and spinning the engine over. There should be a hot blue spark.
– If there is still no spark, I would be suspicious that the key aligning the flywheel with the crankshaft may have sheared. Has the blade encountered an obstacle such as a rock or chunk of wood recently?
To check you’ll need to remove the flywheel. Odds are you’ll find the problem there.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
Loss of spark is caused by anything that prevents coil voltage from jumping the electrode gap at the end of the spark plug. This includes worn, fouled or damaged spark plugs, bad plug wires or a cracked distributor cap.
If the plug is clean or you`ve replaced it and the mower still won`t start, the issue could be a lack of fuel. Either the carburetor is dirty and not able to mist the fuel to be mixed with incoming air, or no gas is getting to it to begin with.
With a poor ground the starter ring return path may not allow adequate amps to return to allow a starter to reach the torque and speed to start. Normally, however, with a well tuned car and cranking, the engine will fire right up. Weakness, though, and it may not start.
Many factors can cause a spark plug to fail; from incorrect heat ranges to improper gapping, to chemical contamination. Yet 90% of spark plug damage claims are due to improper torque. Proper installation torque is critical in the plug`s ability to dissipate heat out of the combustion chamber and into the cylinder head.
Incorrect timing is the most overlooked and misdiagnosed cause of a no-start. Perhaps you automatically think of ignition timing as the position of the crankshaft when the No. 1 plug fires. While this is important, it isn`t the only timing condition that can influence a no-start.
When couples say they no longer feel a “spark,” it may mean that they`re missing the initial feeling of infatuation or that long-term commitment has become challenging. Meeting your partner and falling in love may have felt exciting, new, and intense. You might have felt that it was the only factor in your life.
Simply, the engine will not start if the spark plugs can`t produce enough spark to start the combustion process. Some of the other causes for difficulty starting include issues with the ignition system, a battery needs replacing, or worn-out spark plug wires.
Failing spark plugs can cause the car engine to misfire and thus affect its performance. A single spark plug that fails to ignite the fuel-air mixture can cause a halt in the running of the engine. It can result in incomplete combustion and damage to the catalytic converter of the car.
