The conventional method of tightening a cylinder head bolt is to use a torque wrench.
▲ When torquing the cylinder-head bolts, the bolt force generates a surface pressure, which is essential for achieving a perfect seal. Cylinder-head bolts are the con- necting elements between engine block, cylinder-head gasket, and cylinder head.
Tighten the cylinder head bolts in 2–3 steps in the proper sequence. The final torque specification is 59–64 ft. lbs. (80–86 Nm).
Torque specifications are the values that indicate how much force should be applied to a bolt. These values are usually given in Newton meters (Nm) or foot-pounds (ft-lbs). Torque specifications are important because they ensure that bolts are tightened to the correct level.
Torque is the cross product of distance between point of application of force and center and force. = r * F * sin (theta) Here maximum value of torque is r*F because we know sin(theta) has maximum value of 1….where theta =90 degree. Hence torque is maximum when theta = 90 degree.
Flange Bolt Torque Formula

To calculate the flange bolt torque, multiply the tightening factor by the axial force and the diameter, then divide by 12.

Torque all bolts to 45-55 ft. lbs. (61-75 Nm.). Finally, tighten all bolts and studs an additional 1/4 turn (85-95°).
In practice, a tolerance on the torque value of +/- 10% is commonly used. This allows for the torque accuracy of the tightening tool itself and also allows a bit for intrinsic scatter associated with a person doing the tightening. Design codes such as VDI 2230 incorporate a 10% allowance in their analysis guideline.
The Importance of Proper Torque

Typically, an under torqued bolt will deform and be unable to provide as much clamping force as needed. An over torqued bolt will break.

Torque tightening is the accurate application of torque to a nut so that a bolt can hold its load securely without breaking. Too little and our materials aren`t properly tightened – making it structurally unsafe. Too much torque can break the bolt.
We recommend you use torque values specified below: For bolts with a 6mm Thread Diameter: 20Nm. For bolts with a 8mm Thread Diameter: 22Nm. For bolts with a 10mm Thread Diameter: 25Nm.
To increase the maximum torque of a diesel or gasoline engine, it is necessary to introduce more fuel into the combustion chambers. This increase in fuel also requires an increase in combustibles.
There are four basic types of torque wrenches, each with slightly different operating principles: beam or deflection, dial indicator, clicker, and digital.
Where To Find The Correct Manufacturer Recommended Torque Specs. The torque specs for the axle nut (and other nuts and bolts) should be listed in the dealership/shop guide provided by the manufacturer. If you can`t find that information, or if you don`t have a guide, you can find the specs in the service manual.
Note that the torque is maximum when the angle is 90 degrees.
The maximum value of torque angle in a synchronous motor is 90 degrees electrical.

To put it simply, it is the compression produced by the tightening of a nut against a bolt. The amount of weight that is placed on a bolt is, naturally, limited to how much it is capable of withstanding before coming apart.
Bolts are designed to stretch as you torque them into place, and when you remove them, they snap back to their original position. Because of this, many standard head bolts are okay to use more than once, as long as they have not been stretched past their spring back point.
The only thing that happens if you really overtighten is the bolt or threads fail. If it torqued down nicely, no problem.
Torque the valve cover bolts to 5-6 ft/lbs, making sure gaskets do not slip out of position. Proper torqueing will help to ensure that your covers do not leak oil.
Head gasket thickness will impact Compression Ratio. Changing gasket thickness can be used to fine-tune compression. However, the gasket`s thickness will also affect its ability to seal the combustion chamber and oil and coolant passages. For most engines, we recommend the OEM gasket thickness.
