Remove the old lawnmower pull cord from the handle, feed through the new cord and tie a simple knot. Make sure the knot is nice and tight. Pull it back through the handle to help tighten the knot.
Briggs & Stratton recoil starter rope and handle to fit most `smaller` recoil start engines. The rope is 3.5mm in diameter and approximately 240cm long to reach up the handle of pedestrian machinery. The rope can be shortened if necessary.
Unless your mower is already fitted with an electric starter, then the only way to start a gas lawnmower without the pull cord is to turn the crankshaft using a powerful electric drill and a suitably sized socket.
The problem may be in the recoil starter itself. A tangled coil of rope or a broken spring may be the problem. In many cases the recoil starter is easily replaced as a single assembly. DO NOT attempt do take the starter apart.
If the cord itself is frayed or has exposed wiring, you`ll need to replace the entire electrical cord. Replacing only the plug could leave you open to electrical shock.
For most common applications, use a cord numbered 5 (5/32-inches), 5½ (11/64-inches), or 6 (3/16-inches). Generally, we use cord size 5½ for snow blower and lawn mower starters.
There are a number of possible causes for a lifeless mower, but ultimately only two things are required for an engine to start: fuel and a spark. If the engine isn`t getting a spark at the plug or fuel isn`t reaching the engine, your lawn mower is never going to start.
Replacing a ripcord on your lawn mower is a quick and relatively straightforward job most homeowners can tackle. It takes less than an hour and you probably won`t spend more than $20 on parts if you have the basic tools you need to do the job.
Power tool cords that get accidentally cut or hacked can be permanently repaired in minutes with heat shrinkable tubing and a soldering gun.
Fixing a broken or damaged vacuum power cord is another common vacuum repair that do-it-yourself-ers can easily handle at home. Home repairs on vacuums, tools, outdoor equipment, and other appliances can save you a truckload of money at the repair shop, and anyone can take on simple repairs like this one.

22″ Yard Machine Push Mower: how long should i make my pull cord when i replace…
ANSWER : Long enough that when you pull it you don’t hit feel it come to the end of the rope. Short enough that it winds all the way up. When I replace these things I use a little more than an arms length. 3 foot or so. I wind the spring till it is tight then slide a screw driver through the top to hold the wheel so I can thread the cord and knot it. Then I let it wind itself up until it stops and then add handle and pull just enough tension on it to tie the knot in the handle and make sure it pulls the handle snug to the housing.
