There are several reasons a Craftsman lawnmower may turn over but not start, with the most common ones including the following: Lack of fuel. Dirty air filters. Electrical issues in the ignition system or the starter motor.
The first step is to disconnect the negative battery cable. This will ensure that you don`t accidentally electrocute yourself while working on the starter. To do this, simply loosen the nut on the cable with a socket wrench and pull it off.
Always disconnect the battery before removing the starter motor, which is often awkwardly placed low down on the engine . You may have to raise the car on axle stands and work from below. Disconnect the battery (earth terminal first) to avoid an accidental short circuit.
One of the greatest advantages about riding lawn mower tractors is that they have an electric starter system built in so that they usually start with ease. On a Craftsman tractor, the electric starter system usually only has two problems. Either the battery is dead or the starter is.
Touch the metal shaft of a screwdriver to both of the large terminals at the same time. If the engine turns over and starts, the solenoid is bad and should be replaced. If the starter motor does not run, the motor itself is probably defective.

ANSWER : Normally it hooks up to the engine at the top side where the flywheel is located..at the top you will find two small bolts..and at the bottom one or two wires..just disconnect the battery cables so no sparks or shorts when removing from the starter..then disconnect the starter wires set aside and then remove the two bolts..it should drop right out…note.. In some cases you may need to remove the engine shroud on the top to get at the bolts…not a hard job..if more the one wire…mark them or draw a diagram as where they were attached..good luck
