When purchasing a replacement belt for your mowing deck, be sure to check the parts list or the labeling on the original belt because 42″ decks can come with either 96-1/2″ belts or 99-7/8″ bests.
The “Deck Belt” goes around the pulleys right above the blades on the deck and then to a double pulley. The “Drive Belt” on your mower goes from the transmission, around an Idler pulley then over to the double pulley I mentioned before. The Drive belt also plays a role in making the wheels turn.
A simple way to determine belt size is to simply “add 2″ to your trouser size. For example, if you wear a 34” waist trouser, then a 36 belt size will be a perfect fit. Most will find this simple formula works best for pants worn at a traditional height–close to the natural waistline.
To measure the width, a measuring tape can be used to measure the length of the belt from one side to the other. The thickness of the belt is typically measured with a caliper or micrometer. Once the length, width and thickness are determined, the correct size belt can be purchased to fit the lawn mower.

Start the tape measure at the hole you use and measure to the end of the belt, where it meets the buckle. Belts are measured in inches and you should round to the nearest inch. If you measure 36 inches, you will want to purchase a size 36 belt.
When the engine is running, the crankshaft pulley turns, allows in drive belt to turn all of the other pulleys it is attached to. There are two kinds of drive belts: V-belts and serpentine belts.
Belt drives are not lubricated, whereas the chain drives are lubricated. Belt drives undergo slippage, whereas chain drives have no slippage. Chain drives use sprocket, while belt drives use sheaves (pulleys). Chain drive can operate under high loads, while belt drives can operate under high speed conditions.
Multiply the inch measurement by 2.54 to find your belt size in cm. Men`s pant sizes are usually one size smaller than their belt size. For example, a 36-inch waist will correspond to a 38-inch belt size.
Most Belts are normally measured from where the belt leather folds at the buckle end to the middle hole at the tip end and are usually stamped on the back of the belt with the size example 32, 34, 36 etc.
A small, 1/2-acre lawn is suited to a deck size of 40 inches or fewer. If your lawn is 1/2 to 2 acres, then a riding mower with a deck that is 42 to 48 inches wide would be appropriate. If the lawn is 3 acres or larger, the deck should be at least 50 inches wide.
There is no specific time length that mower belts need to be replaced. Some belts may last longer than others due to different operating conditions. One thing is for certain though, the more the mower is used, the sooner you will need to consider replacing the mower belt.

Deck belt keeps tearing up then falling off
ANSWER : If it’s an idler pulley, where the belt changes direction from the engine – yes it should turn freely. If it’s a double pulley where the drive pulley from the engine connects with the deck/blade pulley, then it it’s not going to turn totally free because of the blade pulleys connected to it. But in all cases, none of the pulleys should be seized. Try using WD40 or PB Blaster on the pulley bearing surface to loosen it up – or a new pulley…
