I am trying to get the rusted on nut off of the blade on a Craftsman Electric lawnmower, 900370510. It turns with the armature. So, the square plastic washer spins under the square metal washer with the nut that is rusted on the motor. I’ve used CRC, wrenches, 2×4’s to brace it, propane & a little mapp gas. Problem is, the whole thing has plastic parts which will break if you chock it. It looks like the mower has quite a few years on it.PS, it is a LH thread, @#$%!Would someone tell me the golden answer? I don’t want to buy the lady a new motor. Thank you
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
I find that nut splitter work ok on occasion if you can get one in there, and just replace the nut(sounds like that’s going to happen anyways regardless) , or pick it up, set the nut on a solid piece of steel, so that it’s supporting the weight of everything, and hit the other side of the nut with a hammer, or a hammer and chisel, with the chisel perpendicular to the shaft and the blade splitting it the long way. Other tricks, are to heat it up red-hot, and hit it with water immediately, or even canned air inverted(will freeze it instantly) in order to get the surfaces to change enough to break loose. Hope these helped; they’ve been standbys for me for years.
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
This nut is a standard right-handed thread (rotate clockwise to tighten, counterclockwise loosen) and should be tightened to between 70 and 90 foot pounds of torque to fasten securely.
To remove a riding lawn mower blade, you need to turn the bolt counter-clockwise. This is the opposite direction of turning a clockwise bolt, which is the most common type of bolt.
Try a 6-point wrench or socket on your seized nut/bolt. Start by rocking the bolt by tightening then loosing, this may be all you need to break through the rust. Try and avoid 12-point wrenches and sockets as they likely to slip and strip the bolt head.
Most lawn mower blades rotate in a clockwise direction (counter-clockwise when viewed from below), and as such have the cutting edge on the right side. If you are unsure of how your mower rotates, check the position of the discharge chute; if it is on the right side angled back, the blade turns clockwise.
It may sound great, but did you know that most lawnmower blade nuts aren`t reverse threaded? If you check today`s market, you`ll notice that the majority of the lawnmower blades work in a right-hand thread or a clockwise direction.

ANSWER : Took the mower to the Black and Decker warehouse where they replaced the switch in the handle. It cost $53.73 total.
I have a problem with a Black and Decker electric lawn mower model MM525. While cutting some high grass today, the mower slowed down, then quit and would not restart. I checked the electrical outlet and there was no power–the fuse was burned out in the switch box. I replaced it, tried again, and again it would not start or even give any response at all, but again it blew out the fuse in the box. The fuse is 25A and the mower is only 12A so that’s not an issue, besides, I’ve used this mower from that outlet for about 4 years since I first got the mower and never had any problem before. My question is: is whatever is causing the mower not to start and to blow out my fuse something that can be repaired or should be? Thanks.
ANSWER : Hello blumph,
I can think of only one or two things that are causing your problems. It could either be approx. a $14.00 switch in the handle that has shorted out, or 2 bad brushes $1.75/ea.on the armature (motor). Both are fairly simple fixes with just a screwdriver and maybe pliers. You might also check and see if the power cord has been chafed or damaged and is shorting out. [email protected] Electric motor runs but well below full power, and over heats quickly. Can I fix this?
ANSWER : It could just need the bearings cleaned and lubed, but it might need them replaced or their could be partial shorts in the motor windings, which would likely make it junk. Perhaps try the bearings, but either bring it in or replace it beyond that.
Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
ANSWER : Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.
Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.
I have had a poulan pro 550 series push mower for almost 1 year at the end of the season last year the mower would start briefly and then stop. i have cleaned out the air filter and that did not help.the mower started, i made one revolution around the yard 3/4th of the way the mower quit. I then primed the mower it started then quit and now it will not start at all. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do. Thanks
ANSWER : There is a little spring that works the carburetor arm. If that popped off then the mower will not run.
