The year 1963 saw the introduction of the world`s first “lightweight” chainsaw, the magnesium-alloy framed Homelite XL-12; the numeral twelve denoting that the power-head weighed a mere twelve pounds. This saw is widely regarded as one of the most recognizable and well-known chainsaws of all time.
The Homelite XL Chain Saw, introduced in 1963, was the first chain saw considered lightweight. It weighs 13 pounds and 14 ounces and is painted in Homelite red enamel.
Your Homelite equipment will have a model information plate located on the unit. It includes the model number (eg. UT10580A), serial number, and other model information. Homelite chainsaws typically have the model number plate located on the rear handle.
The carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is often caused by leaving fuel in the chainsaw for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the chainsaw engine to stall.

If you have an electric chainsaw that won`t start, first make sure that the power cable is connected to the mains, then check whether the cable and plug are damaged. If they aren`t, the problem could lie in the motor which, for example, may have worn or damaged brushes.
If your chainsaw still starts and then stops working, check the air filter. Clean or replace the air filter if it is dirty or damaged. Another reason that your chainsaw starts and then stops working could be that the spark arrestor is dirty or clogged. If this is the case, clean it with a wire brush.
The XL-2 has a 1.6 cubic inch (26.2cc) engine and is avail- able with a choice of 12-inch or 14-inch capacity guide bar and chain.
The XL-12 will drive a cutting bar up to two feet long.
The first patent for an electric chainsaw, the “endless chain saw” as it was called, was granted to Samuel J. Bens. In 1926, the first electric chainsaw that would move to the production line was patented by Andreas Stihl. It was a heavy and bulky model, weighing in at 116 pounds.
