How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Without an air filter in place, the engine may also be sucking dirt and debris in at the same time. This can cause damage to internal engine parts, such as valves, pistons and cylinder walls. The result is excessive oil consumption, poor engine performance, and eventually engine failure.
A: You`re on the right basic path here, but leaving the cover off the air filter housing in the winter could create a dangerous situation; don`t do it. In fact, put it back on in the summer too. This is something that needs to be dealt with properly, not haphazardly.
First, let`s start with your air filter — it does exactly what its name implies. A filter wrap fits around your air filter and provides an extra layer of filtration to keep the air coming into your engine clean by removing dirt, dust, sand, mud and any particulates in the air before it reaches the engine.
As stated it`s a circular air filter. It`s positioned there because it sits on top of the carburetor. Modern cars rarely use circular air filters, they are usually square or rectangular and are connected to the air intake system by tubes.
Running your AC for any time without an air filter is not recommended due to the permanent damage it can cause to the HVAC system. Dirt and dust that is normally absorbed by the filter can make its way into the AC system and wreak havoc on the mechanical components, often leading to expensive repairs.
Without the air filter, all that stuff would get into the combustion chamber of your engine. That can cause a number of problems, such as a drop in power, decreased fuel efficiency, and a harder time getting the vehicle to start.
Another important part of an air filter that can sometimes fail is its sealing surface. In order to ensure that all the air going into the engine gets filtered, air filters have a rubber seal around them that seals against the air intake box. This seal needs to be airtight in order to be effective.
Yes, it`s safe to leave your air purifier on all day. But, you need to make sure that you clean the filters about once a month. The filters trap heavy amounts of dust and allergens which can be harmful to sensitive groups if they`re not cleaned consistently.
A filter wrap does increase the restriction by about 3-5% versus a clean filter without a wrap; however, you will more than make this up under real world conditions, as the filter wrap will improve the airflow over the life of the filter by keeping out the larger particles, bugs etc.
Proper HVAC filters can make the difference between stuffy air filled with pollutants and clean air that`s healthy and easy to breathe. Understanding the different air filter types for homes is the first step to getting the improved indoor air quality you deserve.
The device will work most efficiently if you place it in the central part of the room and at a close distance from windows, because it is through them that dirt mainly penetrates. If you want to use the device in the bedroom, it is best to place the air purifier between the window and the bed.
At the top, there`s a valve called the choke that regulates how much air can flow in. If the choke is closed, less air flows down through the pipe and the venturi sucks in more fuel, so the engine gets a fuel-rich mixture.
One of the main reasons` engine air filters tend to reduce engine power is dirt. Simply replacing your engine air filter can increase horsepower and, in some cases, even improve mileage.
The short answer: You can get away with running your AC without a filter for a short amount of time without hurting your system. That being said, running your AC without a filter for longer than 6-8 hours can cause serious damage to your AC system and significantly lower the quality of the air in your home.
Dirty or damaged air filters reduce the air flow to the engine, changing your car`s air-fuel balance. This imbalance can pollute spark plugs, causing the engine to miss or rough idle; increase engine depositions; and cause the `Service Engine` light to turn on.
A mower engine will run without an air filter, however prolonged use without the air filter risks damaging the piston and cylinder.
The lack of clean air can result in the gas not completely burning during the combustion process. The unburned fuel then exits the vehicle through the tailpipe in the form of black, sooty smoke or flames at the end of the exhaust pipe.

I have air bubbles in pump and junk is returning back into the pool. the pump and the filter are both brand new as is the skimmer. there are no leaks that i can see but there is a funnel formed in the skimmer when the pump is running which causes air to be sucked into the pump. any ideas?
ANSWER : It sound like there is damage to the collectors in the bottom of the filter caused during installation. The collectors at the bottom of the filter are quite delicate and could easily be damaged when adding new sand or other filter media. The collector housing should also be bonded as sand can return through the gaps to the pool. Turn the valve to recirculate and you should see that after a minute or so debris will stop coming out. If this happens then its definitely the filter collectors.

My Craftsman 15 HP Lawn tractor is spewing white smoke. When I removed the air filter, I noticed there was oil all over the inside of the air filter and at the bottom of the air filter. When I run the tractor without the air filter covered I see oil being spewed up through the hot air vent into the carb. What could be causing this?
ANSWER : On ours ,it was a bad valve seal on the intake valve. If you have a way to air-lock the cylinder, (so the valve doesn`t drop), you can make this repair without removing the head.

My intex sand filter is shooting sand into the pool
ANSWER : You have a broken “lateral”. You will have to remove the sand from the filter, find and replace the broken lateral (pipe with slots in it in the bottom of the filter). When you are ready to refill the sand, put enough water in the filter to cover the laterals (several inches actually) to avoid damaging them as you fill.
