There`s no standard size for a 42-inch-cut riding mower. Each model uses a different size belt. To give examples, some models use a drive belt that is ½ inch wide by 92 inches in length, while others use a belt ½ inch wide by 85 inches in length.
The blade drive belt connects the engine pulley to the mower deck pulleys and spins the cutting blades.
A perfectly tight mower belt can rotate without slipping off but not cause the engine to over-exert and overheat. If the belt does not slip off while working and is not producing unfavorable sounds that indicate wearing off of the belt, then that is the perfect tightness for it.
A: Your mower has two belts. Both play a role in making the blades turn. The “Deck Belt” goes around the pulleys right above the blades on the deck and then to a double pulley. The “Drive Belt” on your mower goes from the transmission, around an Idler pulley then over to the double pulley I mentioned before.
The smooth side of the belt goes on smooth pulleys (as shown on the idler pulley pictured above), while the ribbed side wraps around the grooved pulleys.
Your belt size is two inches larger than your pant waist size.

ANSWER : Your belt is not on right. MTDs use a tension system for the drive belts to control speed. You either missed a pulley or got one backwards.Check here for diagrams. You will need the model # for your tractor but is a good site for all kinds of mowers
