My yard pro lawn mower will not start , when i pull on the crank rope it sometimes pulls the rope right out of my hands but it doesn't even try to start. It is a honda engine that has automatic throttle and it also is self propelled
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Two things to check here, check the blade is tight, it acts as a flywheel so needs to be tight, second, check the flywheel key has not sheared as this will cause the engine to kick back as the timing will be out.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A lawnmower engine commonly kicks back when the shear key breaks. The shear key commonly breaks because the blade has kit a solid object and come to a sudden stop. Common symptoms of broken shear key include: Engine won`t start.
The problem may be in the recoil starter itself. A tangled coil of rope or a broken spring may be the problem. In many cases the recoil starter is easily replaced as a single assembly. DO NOT attempt do take the starter apart.
Recoil starters generally include a pull cord wrapped about a pulley, the pulley being rotated by pulling on the pull cord. The rotational energy generated from the pull cord and pulley is transferred to the drive shaft of the engine through a ratchet and/or clutch mechanism.
The operator pulls the rope`s handle or grip. This causes the rope to unwind around the crankshaft and spin it. The spinning motion of the crankshaft cranks the engine. The crankshaft`s motion engages the flywheel, enabling the engine to start.
Pulling a lawn mower backwards is generally not recommended, especially if it`s a self-propelled model, as it can damage the drive mechanism. However, if you`re dealing with a manual push mower and need to maneuver it in a tight space, pulling it backwards briefly should not cause harm.
In this case, the vertical component of the applied force acts in the direction of the weight of the mower. This the effective weight of the mower. Since the effective weight of the lawn mower is lesser in the first case, pulling the lawn mower is easier than pushing it.
The Pull Cord Handle

Pull cord handle often breaks as the handle can sometimes fly loose during the starting procedure. The problem is, the cord may retract back inside the mower. This will require removing the pull start housing to re-tension the spring and fit the new handle.

Common Signs of a Bad Starter

The engine won`t turn over. The most common signal that your starter has a problem is if nothing happens when you turn the key or push to start. Unusual noises, such as clinking, grinding and whirring. If you ignore these sounds, it can eventually lead to damage to the engine flywheel.

If the engine starter motor turns over, the starter solenoid needs to be replaced. If the engine starter motor does not turn over once a jumper wire is connected to the two large lugs on the starter solenoid, replace the engine starter motor.

I have a poulan pro self propelled lawn mower that won’t start. It ran fine this morning, but after I took a break and went back outside to finish mowing, it wouldn’t start. It sounds like it won’t ”catch” when you pull the starter rope. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : You need to check a few things. The spark first, you need to check if it is running correctly, does it have spark, by doing this: take out the spark, put it against a metal surface and pull the pull start if it spark, your good if not you need a new spark plug. Clean out your airfiilter it migth help too. Buy some carb and choke cleaner squirt it up theough the airfilter hole, and start the engine, this will clen the carb. yOU MIGHT NEED TO TAKE OUT THE CARB AND CLENA I OUT THROUGHOULY!!! Try that and it whould work after all these steps!

This hapened on my mower and it turned u that the spark pug was too bigfor the motor and the valves were totally broke!!!Not good…

I have trouble starting a toro walk behind mower
ANSWER : All, I thought my carb was shot, so I replaced it. Still, start but no run (and had to use starting fluid). THEN!!! I noticed the spring to the “rev limiter” (just below and towards rear of carb) was not “tight”. The stupid bracket that holds the end of that spring had been bent down ~1/16″ and that caused all this heartache. CHECK YOUR REV LIMITER!!!

22″ Yard Machine Push Mower: how long should i make my pull cord when i replace…
ANSWER : Long enough that when you pull it you don’t hit feel it come to the end of the rope. Short enough that it winds all the way up. When I replace these things I use a little more than an arms length. 3 foot or so. I wind the spring till it is tight then slide a screw driver through the top to hold the wheel so I can thread the cord and knot it. Then I let it wind itself up until it stops and then add handle and pull just enough tension on it to tie the knot in the handle and make sure it pulls the handle snug to the housing.
