The reasons why mower is not moving forward or reverse is that the battery is dead, or due to clogged fuel line. Additionally, malfunctioning transmission, or a broken drive belt, also a faulty spark plug, even when friction wheel isn`t in contact with the friction plate, or damaged Tires.

This issue may happen if the machine is faulty, the height between the mower deck and the blade is different, or you cut too much grass. While you may find moving in reverse easier to mow the lawn, it may cause various problems related to safety.

Can you pull a self-propelled lawn mower backwards? Yes, you won`t cause any damage to the mower by pulling it backwards.
Mow Forward

Most importantly, walking backward could be a safety risk. If you trip and fall back for whatever reason, you may pull the mower onto yourself and get hurt. That`s why you should always mow in a forward direction unless you really need to maneuver away from something.

If your lawn mower turns on but won`t move, there could be a number of potential causes. The most common issues include a broken or damaged belt, a clogged discharge chute, a broken or damaged drive cable, or a damaged or clogged transmission.
Failure of any mechanical component, a broken hose, or clogged filter will cause tractor hydrostatic transmission problems. But the most common issue will be the oil itself. In the transmission section of your operator`s manual, you`ll find a section that covers oil viscosity.
Worn or broken blade drive belt – If the riding mower blades are not spinning, the blade drive belt may be worn or broken and unable to engage the blades. If the belt is intact, inspect it to see if it`s loose or slipping on the pulleys then replace it with a new one if necessary.

Check the drive belt that is located just above the mower deck. Follow the belt as it wraps around the deck and to pulleys under the engine and the rear tires. Make sure the belt is secured to the pulleys, because if it is not, then the belt (and thus the mower) will not move. If the belt looks broken, replace it.

I have a troy bilt pony and the drive belt to engage to blades keeps coming off. I have replaced the belt and the pully what else could it be?
ANSWER : Well i would take a long look at the spring which holds the tension pulley in place. if it is weak, or not connected correctly, there will be inadequate tension and the belt can come off. I would also take a look at whatever fasteners keep the deck in place as if it is not kept to the rear, there again will be too much play in the deck belt.
